Views on Gambling

What are your views on gambling?
Some conservative politicians here in the UK are discussing the possibility of further relaxing the gambling laws so that casinos and gambling machines are more easily available in ordinary towns.
While I fully admit it goes against what I normally believe about individual freedom of choice, I find gambling disturbing and would prefer to see it much more heavily restricted. I can't see any positives in gambling (except perhaps for the casino owners) and I see lots of negatives. And in a time when the whole global economy is on the verge of collapse largely because of gambling within the financial world it seem insane to me that we should be encouraging people to gamble more!
What do you think?
I dont like it. But I dont think its immoral or anything, just seems like a risk thats not worth the reward. And it seems like it can easily become a slippery slope. And... I am kind of a control freak when it comes to my money and dont want to gamble it away :p.

As for relaxing the gambling laws, I guess that would depend on the law and on how much problem gambling is (thinking of people who gamble away all their money, not the "ordinary" ones).

Cooler than most of you
Put it all on 28. Never fails. Unless a different number hits.

Haha, I always bet 29. The middle row is where it's at. It hasn't failed me very often :p

I don't believe in criminalizing vices. I believe in regulating and taxing them.

I agree with this. I don't really see anything wrong with gambling, but just like bars and strip clubs, I don't need one on every corner to know that I'm in a free country. I know exactly why people don't necessarily like these particular activities and if I have to go out of town to keep me and them happy at the same time, I don't think its too big of a concession on my part.

Taxing my winnings is a no-brainer as well. Its free money that I really did nothing to earn. It makes sense to me that the state should get a bigger piece of that earning than my typical wages. That being said, the same philosophy should be applied to capital gains. But that's a different topic altogether ;)
