I took one back to where I bought it
they said the same thing
no power at all

In terms of data recovery, that is actually a *good* sign. It increases the chance that your hard drive is OK.

Backup backup backup - preferably on different devices (or the cloud :oops:), and in different locations too. I can recommend using something like Macrium Reflect (free), or another, to image one's system so as to recover from such nasties. Never had one fortunately.
