I'm thinking of volunteering as a telephone befriender

To help lonely and isolated people

Does anyone here have any experience of doing this or of doing anything similar?
I've never heard of this. What is it?

Yes, I was with the Samaritans for about 4-5 years. It is incredibly rewarding at times but it can be very tough going. In the end I had a serious dose of burn out and never went back.

A bonus point was that amongst the other volunteers I found some truly wonderful people.

Not as such but i consider myself an aid to my brother in law who is paranoid schizophrenic and so has no friends in is very lonely. His only contact with the outside world is mental health services and me.

I usually spend a couple of hours day listening to him on the phone. Something rewarding, sometimes horrific.
