Was George H.W. Bush a good president?

I liked Ronald Reagan for helping end the Cold War and for the longest economic boom which he enhanced by cutting taxes and lowering both interest rates and inflation.

I liked Bill Clinton for balancing the budget and his foreign policy.

Is it fair to blame Bush Senior for the deficits under Reagan when those deficits were a necessity? I can't blame Bush for a recession but Clinton did a good job after him. So was Bush a good president?

By the standards of the current one, he was wonderful. By the standards of the average, I'd rank him as decent.

He raised taxes, started a war, & promoted Americastan as policeman of the world.
It just shows to go ya that evil can be a paragon of civility.
(He said he'd start the war even if Congress opposed it.)

"Read my lips!", eh? :)

Yeah, I was real happy when they started the Desert Storm ground war on my birthday. I remember muttering to the TV, "No, really, you shouldn't have."

I have to agree with good ol' @sun rise on this one. By today's standards, he was very good, by ordinary standards, he was a very decent man.

Had it not been for Ross Perot splitting the Repulican vote, there probably would not have been a Clinton presidency. He was no Reagan but held the office in respect and class unlike Clinton and Trump.

Compared to his son, he was a saint.

I do not believe or condone any of them.

Too often, people judge a Prez not by his legacy in office, ie, enduring
benefits & costs, but rather by how personally likeable he was.
People like #41 (dad), so he was a good one.
People hate #43 (son), so he was a disaster.
And yet, #41 set the stage for the problems we faced during the reign #43.
I find both to be quite similar in advancing policies I oppose.

I heard an interesting take on the 1st Gulf War....
Twenty Years Later, First Iraq War Still Resonates

Why do people complain about the war in Iraq? Saddam DID have WMDs- he used them on the Kurds during the Al Anfal campaign

Because it was extremely expensive, left a legacy of animosity towards
us in the middle east, & was part of our playing policeman to the world.
While many approve of such things, some of us oppose them.

Note:
His having WMDs was a direct result of our foreign policy in the first place.
(He got'm from us.)

Is his value as president defined by one issue?

Why do people blame Bush Jr for toppling Saddam when the criticism was Bush Sr DIDN'T topple Saddam?

For me, it was not the toppling of Saddam, but the near complete destruction of the Infrastructure. I had friends in Mosul. The so called "Coalition", more correctly American extremists, put Iraq back into the Dark ages. Being Muslim, I know that the Sunni and Shia have been in an uneasy standoff for a very long time, and the invasion there destroyed that. Of course, Saudi Arabia was cheerfully funding the Sunnis in Iraq, and Iran was funding the Shia. So they could have a war and both countries could feign innocence. I'm sick of it all now.

When #41 didn't topple him, it left the problem in place.
When #43 was in office, he (with Congress's help) began
2 wars which cost several trillion dollars, & weren't a useful
response to terrorism or mid-east security.

A question....
How involved was Bush in Reagan's proxy attack (using Iraq) on Iran?
It would be quite damning if he had any role in this deadly debacle.

The Sunnis of Iraq were backed by Saddam, not Saudi Arabia. The Saudis don't like Saddam (except I know one that does)
