Was Jesus Black

On a more serious note, I remember watching a show on the Discovery channel [i think it was Discovery anyway] about this and they said he wasn't a white man as commonly portayed but simply looked much like a man from the middle east.

He would have been Middle-Eastern, given that he was a Jew in that region at that time of that parentage...

I don't think, from what I read, that the movie is trying to make the point that Jesus the man "really" was black...I think it's more a "Jesus is a universal figure and can and should be portrayed as such."

I really really really don't understand why there is so much controversy and question about what color/race Jesus was. He was a Jewish man born in the Middle East. That would make him not caucasion, not African, but Middle Eastern. What is so hard to understand about that? This is, to me, like asking "What color was Washington's white horse". This isn't even a midly cloudy issue that could possibly be the basis for an "inspirational film". I'm sorry, but making Jesus a black man so that people can "relate to him" is just racism with fluffy lining. Why can't you appreciate him for what he was even if his skin was a different color.

I agree........... although i think certain portrayals in art etc were to help people relate to him in a european way

Yeah, but it still doesn't make it right. Just because everybody in Euorpe at the time was racist, doesn't make racism ok. It's the same thing really.

Popular does not mean right.

Why do folks think it's so important to know what Jesus looked like? As far as I can find, there's only one reference in the Bible as to His looks, and that one is not very flattering.

I've said this before ~ but ~ it seems to me that God has a good reason for not giving us a description of Jesus' physical appearance, since it seems so many folks end up wanting to make an image of Him...

The most common point in the discussion seems to what difference it makes what color he was.
My feelings are that people or society in general can not get over having images to relate to. In those images we tend to make in our own image because we are basically a vain people.
