Was it acceptable for President Obama to use the N word in this context?

I don't understand the question.
What might Obama be expecting from what? Society? Use of the word in an interview? What?

Sorry, I guess it wasn't part of the quote but implied in the OP.

"there's still plenty of room for America to combat racism."

Maybe it was just an assumption imposed by the author of the article.

Whenever I read 'N-word' or worse yet when I hear someone outright saying it, I cringe. It sounds as silly as "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named".
I agree. Everyone knows what one means when they say "the N-word", so it's rather silly to say that but not say "******", used in non-demeaning context of course.

Just how you use them.

It would be difficult to describe the character of the inter-war years up to emancipation, with out using the words in common use at that time.
You don't sanitise history by painting it white.

When I saw this on the news, yes, he was very "right" to use it. How the word is considered inappropriate is not a good measurement of how "less racist" society has become, and using the word itself rather than "the n-word" shows a more serious, more mature, and more educated approach to the issue.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
I thought any black person could use the n word if they wanted to??
Black folks in my area typically use a at the end. Not r. N***a

I think it's great idea when you actually think about it, but It's still sounds too "gangland" imo for my tastes.

Personally, I'd like to see him incorporate it in some way into every speech. I suppose it's too much to hope for him to start using "cracker" as well.

I voted yes.

Some speech analyst lady was interviewed yesterday about Obama's speech and what he said. The lady stated that the N word can be used in many different ways. She said Obama used it in a historical way.
