We could be 16 years into a methane-fueled 'termination' event significant enough to end an ice age

It is and since there is this crater it is also a stunning sight.
But there are bigger and longer burning fires, mostly coal mines. One is in Pennsylvania and burns since 1962:
Centralia Mine Fire: Underground Coal Fire Has Been Burning for Over 50 Years
Yes, once such fires start they are almost i impossible to put out. The heat is so high, and is the surrounding strata have been heated up to the point of ignition so all that is required is a source of oxygen. One may be able to temporarily shut off the source of oxygen, but it appears not long enough to allow it to cool below the heat of ignition.

Yeah those underground coal fires burn like forever.
That reminds me of peat bogs that would catch on fire in the summer, within city limits. Authorities would have tanker trucks pouring water into the dirt for weeks.

As far as the OP goes? I don't really care about this. If we can still afford to eat in two years, perhaps I'll get more concerned then.
