Yes, once such fires start they are almost i impossible to put out. The heat is so high, and is the surrounding strata have been heated up to the point of ignition so all that is required is a source of oxygen. One may be able to temporarily shut off the source of oxygen, but it appears not long enough to allow it to cool below the heat of ignition.It is and since there is this crater it is also a stunning sight.
But there are bigger and longer burning fires, mostly coal mines. One is in Pennsylvania and burns since 1962:
