"We don't want any more black pastors..."

"'We don't want any more Black pastors coming in here ... sitting with the victim's family, trying to influence a jury in this case,' said attorney Kevin Gough, who represents defendant William Bryan."

Really? Wow! This, by a lawyer on a team that managed to get under 9% black representation on a jury in the killing of a black man by whites, in a district with well over 50% black population.

If that had been said in Canada, that lawyer would have been disbarred in hours!

Yeah, I saw that in the news yesterday. It seems that the judge was confused by the strange and outrageous request. Apparently, he felt that the family only needed one black pastor there to comfort them and didn't want any more coming in.

The jury composition was also questionable, with 11 whites and 1 black. The defense apparently struck quite a number of black potential jurors from the pool.

What is this from? I don't know what is going on.

That was a shocking thing to hear from an attorney in 2021. That wouldn't surprise me in 1950's Mississippi.

I'm going to guess this lawyer is very right wing and likely just has been influenced by right wing rhetoric for so long that he wasn't aware that his thoughts (that he expressed in open court, and videoed) was racist.

Ah. Well see I live under a rock. I did not know this happened cuz I don't watch the news. I'll look it up and read the link @Stevicus provided
So one hates to ask about your culinary habits, but living under a rock -- are the grubs particularly delicious this time of year? I'd ask Timon and Pumba, but they're not members.

Hmmm...with ketchup and a little bit of seasoning...it taste ok. Not great but not bad either...might need to add more salt.

Things are different here.
Race matters.

Maybe judge by the color of one's skin and not the content of their character is the new normal?

Maybe the lawyer see ones color more than ones character being used here.

Personally I don't see how a black pastor would or could affect a court case as a non participant.

It's the right, last time I was aware, for anyone to sit in the courtroom to witness the proceedings, provided space is available.

I did not know enough about this trial before my previous comment. I was unaware of the makeup of the jury. In an area with over 50% black population it really makes no sense to have a jury that only has one person of color on it. All the rest are white. I could see concerns if there were a fair number of black people on the jury and there was pressure from a preacher of a church that they went to, but with only one black jury member I do not see how this is going to happen.

Indeed? I don't suppose you'd care to expand on that?
A court example....
People openly lobby for more black jurors in order to
sway verdicts in one direction or the other. Al Sharpton
types are there to provide theater, which is to sway
public opinion, & indirectly the judge & jury with public
pressure.
Court is often thought of as this bastion of objective
evidence, reason, rule of law, & justice. While can
happen, it's also full of politics, theatrics, prejudice,
malefaction, theatrics, & manipulation.

Did I mention theatrics?

Jury composition is determined not just by random draw,
but also by each side having a certain number of jurors
they can reject for any reason. I suspect that the defense
would fear prejudice from black jurors towards a white
defendant (painted as a white supremacist in the media).
I wonder how many people want more black jurors for
a greater likelihood of conviction?

I wonder what the reaction would have been if the prosecutor rejected white jurors.
