Wearing gold Haram for men

In the West, it is sometimes not uncommon to see men wearing gold chains around their neck, or gold wedding rings, or wearing shirts made of silk. It should be known that such clothing or adornment is haram for men, but permissible to women. As such, if men wear gold or silk, they are acting effeminately, which is disliked by Almighty Allah.

Muhammad (SAW) took some silk in his right hand and some gold in his left, declaring, "These two are haram for the males among my followers." (Reported by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, al-Nisai, Ibn Hayyan; lbn Majah, who adds "but halal for the females.")

'Umar reported that he heard the Prophet (peace be on him) say, "Do not wear silk, for those who wear it in this life shall not wear it in the Hereafter." (Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim. A Similar hadith is reported by them on the authority of Anas.)

Muhammad did permit silver rings. According to ibn Umar, al-Bukhari reported the former saying, "The Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) wore a silver ring. After him, Abu Bakr and then Umar and Uthman wore it, until it fell off his finger into the well of Arees." (Reported by Bukhari). There is no prohibition against other metals such as Iron or copper.

Muhmmad also made an exception for medical reasons. Bukhari reported that he llowed Abdulrahman bin 'Auf and al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam permission to wear silk when they suffered from scabies.

I don't wear gold simply because if someone grabs me by the necklace, or if I get it caught on something while moving swiftly, then I'm likely to die... and that's just not cake.

How about white gold? it looks like a silver one. What is the wisdom in this ruling? is it because women used to wear gold or because it's very expensive compared to silver, iron, etc?

Regarding white gold, i think it depends on what is refered to as such. For example, some people consider platinum to be white gold. In that case, a ring does not actually contain any gold material.

If "white gold" is gold mixed with silver or such, then it is still haram.

The ruling is most concerned with two things: first, the showing off of excessive wealth; second the appropriate behavior of men with respect to women. Just as it's inappropriate for men to wear feminine attire, it's also disliked when they act or dress effeminately.

No need to fear offending people. You can only tell them what is in the Quran, the Hadith and the Sunnah. If have good intentions and want to guide people to follow Allah (SWT) then you shouldn't feel uncomfortable.
