Wee bit weird....

Eh, I don't know exactly what I want to say. I want to express my empathy, but I'm struck dumb and inarticulate.

Over the past few months I've become friends with a guy at work, who is Catholic. He spent two years training in Rome for the preisthood, before deciding it wasn't for him. He still appears to hold religion close, and was annoyed when I spoke of Pope Benedict in less than respectful terms.

...So, this Church-Abuse story has really hit now. The media is going to town, as they say. It bothers me that my friend is clearly troubled by this. And I'm bothered that there seems to be a lot of pleasure being taken in exposing what is a pretty nasty affair.

I suppose that I'm trying to say that I don't like it. It feels like hunting season has started, and some people don't care who they hurt in the pursuit of high profile targets.

Is it tough being a Catholic right now?

Or are you guys taking it in stride?

Thanks for the thoughts. It's not hard being a Catholic for me now. Of course I think it's worse across the pond than it is here in the states. In the end the Church will survive and we will emerge stronger and better for having gone through this dark time. And in a few hundred years this will be just another blotch on an already checkered history. The Church ain't perfect.

I'm new to the forum but must say, your comments struck me as being "charitible", that is expessing the type of love that God calls us to. Your compassion overrides the more obvious choice for many; that of condemnation. I embrace Runlikethewind's thoughts. The Church will survive. After all, these times pale in comparison to some 2,000 years ago when Christ was nailed to a cross.

It is truly horrible what has happened in the Church in recent years. I don't think anyone condones the abuse. Everyone I know condemns it. However, I still also feel like the media is like on a hunting trip or something. They really don't care who they hurt in their pursuit of high profile targets and that angers me. But regardless, the Church will survive.

And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
