That looks interesting. I looked them up to see if we get such around here; I think we do, but our version looks more mosquitoish... Actually, I've heard it said over and over that they're male mosquitos...

We have a large number of different species in the US. Definitely in the Midwest. Harmless, but some species have maggots that live in and are pests of turf. These are referred to as leatherjackets. I think because their skin is tough and looks leathery.
