Free university is insane

Those crazy Europeans! I knew it!

Serious question. Long term, how is a nation
that has prohibitively expensive higher ed
to compete with a nation that has free ed
in, say, as regards expanding the number
of well educated engineers?

Great post, thanks. I think you hit the nail on the head with this part.

I think a key fact is that there are over 300 million Americans and most of them have things to do each day. Not everyone can dedicate hours and hours to the kind of education and fact-checking required to get a fully accurate picture of the world. We need reliable, informative sources of news.

The 24/7 fear-mongering from TV news, including both Fox News and OANN and Newsmax and Breitbart, is incredibly toxic. I would probably vote for Trump too, if I believed half of what those networks pedal was accurate. The world they describe is truly frightening and the liberals who inhabit it are cartoonishly evil. Unfortunately, MSNBC and CNN are not much better, in my opinion. Personally, I do not watch any TV news.

It’s a shame because anyone who listens to radio sports programming knows that the average American is perfectly capable of having a civilized, productive debate. The difference is that when you turn on ESPN they aren’t spreading lies and propaganda in favor of one particular team. Isn’t it a little ironic that our national sports discussions are more grounded in fact and reason than our political discussions? (Or am I being too generous in how I describe the sports discussions?)

To expand on your astute observations about sports discussions vs political discussions, it's a mystery to me how someone who perfectly understands sports statistics can go dumb as a brick a mere moment later when the topic turns to political statistics.

We sure hear a lot of hate from the left.
I've been thinking about this recently.
I disagree with nearly everyone.
Conservatives....
- I mock their sky fairies.
- I favor gay marriage, legal prostitution, abortion, flag burning, & drug legalization.
- I'm OK with government provided health care.
- I'm a draft dodging un-patriot who opposes their wars.
Liberals...
- I'm a libertarian, a capitalist, & I'm empathy challenged.
- Women have the right to prostitute themselves.
- I oppose their efforts to micro-manage our lives.
Even libertarians...
- I favor environmental protection.
- I'll compromise with the opposition.

On RF, I've found that conservatives are generally more
civil & tolerant of opposing views. Liberals...while many
here are also civil & tolerant, a sizable number are very
hostile & proud of it. Granted, RF is overwhelmingly liberal,
so the bad examples will be more numerous.
But even adjusting for that, conservatives are the more open
& friendly bunch....generally speaking. Is this an inherent
difference, or does it relate to the climate of Trump? It seems
inherent because it was thus long before The Donald infected
our forum.

Here's hoping that Biden's presidency will be both calming &
productive.

Dunno that I heard the word "hate".
As such.

Seriously, try tuning in Sean Hannity,
Laura Ingram, or Tucker Carlson for at
least 15 minutes. Then listen the same
period of time to Rachael Maddow, Joe
Scarborough, Chris Hayes, etc. Keep
a tally of remarks that strike you as hate
laden. That's subjective, but I trust your
judgement. Then compare your tallies
of the sides. Tell me what you find.
I'd be curious to know.

I don't trust you. You are trying to kill me.

We sure hear a lot of hate from the left.
Trump refused to take seriously a virus that killed 300,000 Americans and tried to sabotage our democracy.

When one behaves this way, one can expect a lot of pushback from the opposition. I’m not a fan of “hate” but I’m glad someone heard us - Trump sure didn’t.

Wow, that is interesting. You hear a lot of hate from the left but not from the right. You must have not been paying attention to what the most powerful man on the right, the President of the United States, and his supporters have been saying - and I suppose I can hardly blame you.

Specific reference to the word "hate".

My stomach isn't strong enuf to listen to them either.

I got curious and listened to Rush a few times.

I must say, he is an effective speaker!

As for content, I hear he is all kinds of
racist, misogyn, -phobic etc.

So I look it up what is the basis for it, and it just
is not there.

Hannity, I dont care what he says. Hate at first hear.

I could write chapters about it. Can you narrow your question a bit?

Okay. Well virtually ALL politicians could probably be called "corporate", but I'd like to hear your definition.

As for neoliberal, I'm just looking for your definition, it's a polysemantic word :)

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
For what it’s worth: half of us over here in America voted against the guy, loathe him beyond all loathing, and can’t imagine what planet the other half of America came from.
One comes from a different planet, the other lives in some crazy alternate dimension complemented with unicorns, fairies, and pixie dust clamoring for an impossible utopian dreamland of their own making.
