Well, dang it, I'm going to have surgery - so you'll be seeing more of me!

Kathryn

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
OK - that chronic pain I've been grousing about? Well, hopefully the end is in sight. I've had a very painful ankle (which caused knee and hip and sciatic nerve pain) for nearly a year and the docs thought it was a strained Achilles tendon. Well, the MRI results are back and I've got a two inch tear in my Achilles tendon - it's literally hanging by a coupla threads. All that physical therapy I've been doing has only made things worse (I kept TELLING them it didn't feel right!).

I am going to have surgery in a few days and will be on crutches (non weight bearing) for SIX WEEKS - augh!!!!!!@#$%^&! Then a "boot" for six more weeks, and hopefully by January I will FINALLY be able to walk normally for the first time in over a year.

Those of you who are praying types, please keep me in your prayers. I am normally a very active person and this inability to walk, jog, bicycle, dance, etc for the past year has really chapped my hide!

We're going to Europe the spring of 2011 and I am really praying that I'll be in top form again by then.

At least I have gained some empathy for the disabled throughout this, so it hasn't been a total waste. But I am sick and tired of sitting on my ***.:run:I hate this thing and I've been stomping around in it for much of the past year:

Awwww, thanks guys. I don't do all that well sitting still. For instance, I just realized this morning "How am I going to get from the kitchen to the den with a cup of coffee while I'm using crutches?" Sheeze! This is going to take some thought.

Seriously - how will I do that? I have resigned myself to setting up camp in the den, but I just realized the complexity of all sorts of little scenarios. Like...taking a bath - out, I guess. I guess I'll have to forego the jacuzzi tub and bubble bath for a shower sitting in a plastic chair with a trash bag over my leg. ARUGH!!!!!!!!!

Well, at least I will get two weeks off from work.

Yeah, I can't imagine you sitting still for two weeks, Kathryn. I hope it turns out to be easier to get around than you anticipate.

Yeah, this is the sort of thing I'd rather be doing:

This was October of last year, and I had already booked a flight back to Virginia again for the end of this month -to be with these fabulous people again (my daughter and her family). So I'm pretty bummed. But at least I can reschedule the flight - for a fee.

FRUSTRATION!!!! Oh, well - focus on the positive. It can be fixed, I'll regain my range of motion and probably be pain free in a few months, and I've got good insurance and the time I can take off with pay. Things could be a LOT worse.

Glad we will see more of you, sorry you have to go through the pain and discomfort.

Don't worry, you'll be riding the cannon again in no time....:run:

Since you're having a major repair
I'm composing a special non-prayer
to speed up the mend'n
of your stitched up tendon
while reclining on your derriere.

Btw, I got the cannon joke. Frankly, I'm shocked!

Kathryn, you will be in my prayers. God's speed with your upcoming recovery, and I look forward to watching you keep these Liberal, er I mean progressives in line.

I hope you are getting around good enough to make it to the voting booth. :D

Have AirCast, will be voting! I wouldn't miss these elections for anything!;)

Good luck with your surgery, but it will be nice to see you around here more!

I am reading a good book "Mao's last dancer". It's pretty good and is a true story.

This confused the hell out of me at first. I was wondering what the point of non-weight-bearing crutches could possibly be. :)

Anyway, I'm glad they've figured out what's wrong and you're on the way to getting it fixed. Sounds like you'll be getting a lot of reading done.

Sounds interesting - I'll download a sample on my Kindle and check it out.

Well, I am all nervous now - day after tomorrow, and I've got a lot to do tomorrow to get ready for 2 weeks of being completely off my entire leg, 4-6 weeks more of non weight bearing (crutches) and then another 4-8 weeks of the aircast.

I'M SCARED!!!!!!! I am going to be awake (with a spinal block) during the surgery and I am a little freaked out by that. Also, they may have to "harvest" a tendon from my big toe to re inforce the Achilles tendon, and that is also unnerving. And finally (and most importantly), I can't eat or drink anything for about 15 hours (midnight till after the surgery, which is the afternoon Friday) - and that may have me as upset as anything else!

Wow, I'd be pretty freaked out, too. Just reading what you've said makes me shudder slightly. On the plus side, after all this, you'll be back in tip-top form and pain-free! Should make all the pain (and freakiness) worth it. :) Take care.
