"We're a family here." - Corporations to their employees

an anarchist

Your local loco.
I've worked for quite a few restaurants run by corporate chains. One of the things that is always reiterated in the training and videos that Corporate makes the new hires watch is that the coworkers are supposed to be "a family".

What do you guys think of this? Are your coworkers "your family"?

Personally, I hate this corporate speak and catchphrase. I believe it is icky and manipulative.

First off, not everyone has positive relationships with their families, so equating the work environment to a home environment may not be good for people who have bad home environments.

Secondly, it's a ploy by the bosses to make you work extra/harder. You do favors for your family. You turn a blind eye to your family's misdeeds.

Gosh it makes me cringe every time I hear "We're a family here." I'm not looking for family, I'm looking for work! I've been doing job interviews this past month and managers who interview me often tout that "they are family" with the employees.

What do you think?

Neither family, nor associates, nor partners.

All a load of crap.

Boss: "We're a family here!"
Also Boss: *doesn't let me use my sick leave when i have medical emergency* *retaliates against me when I quit because of a medical emergency I can't use sick leave for*

Working on getting a lawsuit cooking. These corporate buttheads are unreal! A load of crap indeed.

They like to make it sound like you're a participant involving executive stock options, bonuses, golden parachutes, and generous retirement packages.

Yeah, it always makes me gag to hear stuff like that. We ain't a family. Family is a very privileged position in my life, and a corporation and their corporate minded drones are not in thay circle.
Quit telling me who my family is. You want to tell me aunts amd uncles aren't family enough but you'll insert yourself as family? Do bugger off straight to hell.

I was a line cook at Olive Garden.

I KID YOU NOT, when people ordered extra sauce, the GM instructed us to simply shake the plate around so the sauce would spread out more, but to not put extra sauce. The customer would be charged for extra. I KID YOU NOT
It's certainly believable.

It's a lie.

How are you getting job interviews? I've given up applying because I never hear anything back at all. I don't know how people get jobs now and I'm stuck. It's infuriating.

I had some coworkers who were like family, but that was not from company effort. That was simply the result of doing an emotionally difficult job and having the right combination of coworkers that took down a lot of boundaries.

The corporate folks at the top didn't care, but a lot of the managers down the chain did.

I recently started work with a big box home improvement retailer that tells me I'm part of the family. They still have yet to invite me to dinner or any other functions. They pretty much ignore me unless they want me do work. But then again, in that respect, it does remind me a lot of being in my parents' house growing up.

That was something I wondered on when reading the OP... What does being 'family' actually mean?

Few and far in between honestly. I've had 3 in two months. I live in a city with good employment during the winter but the worst employment rate in the nation during summer. Just a hot desert, so we got warm winters and a lot of tourists then.

Unemployment is such a drag. It's an awful feeling. My dad was giving me crap yesterday calling me a "bum". I told him he doesn't know what it feels like since he's been working his dream career since 1984.

We're not unemployed on purpose. It is depressing for me. The hard part is getting the foot in the door.

I can't get government food stamps or unemployment because my former employer retaliated against me and provided false employment information to the offices. It is a struggle.

We have to learn to lean on those we can. To rely on the kindness of others is certainly humbling and can be infuriating

I decided I wanted a second job at 8:30am on a Monday morning (July 29th, I think), got on Indeed and completed an application by 8:45am, received an email by 9am inviting me for an interview, scheduled the interview at 11:15am, and had a job at 11:45am.

It's certainly an employee's market right now.

Depends where you are and what you're looking to do, I suppose.

I know a guy who's been putting in applications on a daily basis, and has had one callback that went nowhere.

This is why unions are important. No one is going to protect you from the exploitation that companies try to get out of you without there being a third party to keep things fair
Even then unions are often hamstrung by laws and corporate underhanded tactics. Take the fact that my union just won pay raises for everyone. In response corporate just cut all the stores manning hours from 250-275 man hours a week to under 200 at all times. So it's the same work with the same people, but less hours to work.

I use Indeed, too, and am about to get rid of it because it just puts my data out there for scammers to take and they're the only ones who are contacting me. I get scam job offers only. I apparently don't have the correct directions to this fabled employee's market because I'm not seeing it at all.
