What are People Really Worshipping?

Assuming there is no deity, what are people really worshiping when they worship deity?

I think best case, they are worshiping nature, the universe, etc in the guise of a deity or deities. That is, when they ask themselves what sort of relationship they should have to deity, they are effectively asking themselves what sort of relationship they should have to nature, the world, the universe, etc.

Worse case, they are worshiping their own personality projected large.

Best case: they are worshiping the Great Mystery within which all that exists finds it's source, sustenance, and purpose. The source of nature, itself, so to speak.

Worst case: they are worshiping the deification of their own egos. Angry men worship angry gods. Vengeful men worship vengeful gods. Weak men worship the gods of authority. And stupid men worship gods that abide no examination..

People in essence worship what they happen to build up, establish, and erect around them.
A religious infrastructure of one's own making that supports iconic and representative expression.

Trees, sun, moon, birds, cats, thunder and lightning, wind, fire etc

......

Churches, temples, meeting chambers, altars, books, statues, idols , money, gold, silver, candles, stained glass etc.

. ... Music, talks, sermons, discourses, decrees, laws, commandments, lectures, lessons etc...
