Why didnt it work until now? Because attempting to mix the two strategies together (dehumanising on one hand and trying to be/act friendly on the other) is a little contradictory... combining two contradictory positions tends to merely make your position unclear - certainly not to be considered a reliable position that someone might look to embrace wholeheartedly... it creates uncertainty and resentment.
