And yes I was being a spoiled rectum in that comment. You know I can't help myself.
Aye, there are some things that I really raise my eyebrow at. People in America prattling about "karma" when someone gets their comeuppance in the same day, the people who gather everything just because, etc.I am referring to cases where people feel the need for cultural appropriation for religious comfort or feel the need to find the religion that confirms their biases.
I worship who I worship - the Norse Gods - due to personal encounter. I can't explain it very well, but I know the God (well, one of) that I encounter to be Thor, not Zeus. So far as the myths, I hold that they teach stories, not literal histories, and use the Gods as character. Which isn't to say that the Gods are nothing but characters, only that it's akin to modern superhero comics; Marvel uses a God to tell stories and make movies. Why would you bother using such mythologies to validate your religious beliefs? For example if you do not believe that the myths are true then why engage yourself with them?
Heathenry by and large does this. For instance the festival of Disting way back when was used to charm ploughs and prepare the earth for crop planting. Well, not many of us are farmers these days. So we praise Freyr for a fertile coming year, recognize the coming summer, and some even charm their tools of productivity, not necessarily ploughs. We try not to cling to the past "just because", but change with the ages.If for ritualistic purposes then why not chose your own understanding of why you must engage in ritualism?
Skepticism is also actually a big thing in Heathenry, and often I've heard "sometimes a thunderstorm is just a thunderstorm." So we very much rebuke blind faith reasoning.
Also sorry for being a bit of a donkey myself![/QUOTE]
