What are the values of moderate Muslims?

I've been trying to understand Islam for a couple of years now. I've read one translation of the Quran and skimmed through a few others. I've been on several other Islamic sites. I live in "the West".

What we in the West hear over and over again is that most Muslims in the world are "moderate". I have been trying to understand what that means. One place to start understanding the idea of "moderate Muslim" might be with values. Here is a list of core values that I believe in:

- Honor
- Freedom
- Arts
- Knowledge
- Friendship
- Logic
- Compassion

If you think of yourself as a moderate Muslim, do you hold these same values? If not, could you share your core values?

Hi Icehorse and welcome to RF :foryou:

This may not be the right answer for your question but still what I have to say is , there nothing like moderate Muslim and/or orthodox Muslim .

A Muslim is a Muslim . Muslim believe in One GOD-ALLAH , one Prophet-Muhammad and one book-Qur'an . It started 1400 years back and will continue like that ....
Thanks .

Seeing how I must stick to respectful questions here in the DIR... would it be appropriate to answer the OP by saying that Muslims tend to perceive order, respect for tradition, and the desire to personally contribute to the well-being of the community as values worth pursuing?

Would it be fair that Muslims are generally speaking less individualistic than... well, than the stereotypical American?

And last but not least, are any of you willing to be so kind as to create or point me towards a similar thread that is not in the DIR, so that I can speak a bit more freely on this very relevant and interesting subject matter? :)

hi and welcome, i think you need to go deeply with your question, all of those things are allowed in Islam, but some of them has limits, so the friendship between two guys has limit, so they can't go for homosexual, Arts is allowed but has limit too, for example i can't make a movie mocking the Christianity nor depict a table like that, or naked men or women.
compassion, Knowledge, logic, honor i do think it's open without limits

I'm still a bit confused about the forums here, where should I start a new thread?

Ok, as suggested, I restarted this thread over in the:

religious education / topics / comparative religion forum.

Sorry for any confusion.

Oh, it is not wrong to have this thread created here in this DIR. Nor is it wrong to have it created in Comparative Religion, either, nor in both.

It just turns out that only Muslims are expected to give answers here, while others may speak on the matter in the other area.
