29 Of The Most Important Values To Live By

I am big on kindness - never used to be though!!!! Here is what they have to say on the matter -

Kindness is about treating others the way you want to be treated.

It’s more than just holding your tongue when you’re tempted to say something unkind; kindness looks for ways to make life better for others. It takes delight in lifting others up and reminding them they’re not alone, invisible, or insignificant.

Kindness and compassion are closely related; the latter involves the readiness to see a situation from someone else’s perspective and to give them the benefit of the doubt. It also takes into consideration what the other person has gone through and chooses to respond with kindness rather than anger or vengefulness.

Both demonstrate at least a subliminal appreciation for the connectedness of all living beings; when you show kindness and compassion to others, you benefit (at least) as much as they do.

Enjoy your day!

Baha'u'llah sums this up for what I try to be.

"Be generous in prosperity, and thankful in adversity. Be worthy of the trust of thy neighbor, and look upon him with a bright and friendly face. Be a treasure to the poor, an admonisher to the rich, an answerer of the cry of the needy, a preserver of the sanctity of thy pledge. Be fair in thy judgment, and guarded in thy speech. Be unjust to no man, and show all meekness to all men. Be as a lamp unto them that walk in darkness, a joy to the sorrowful, a sea for the thirsty, a haven for the distressed, an upholder and defender of the victim of oppression. Let integrity and uprightness distinguish all thine acts. Be a home for the stranger, a balm to the suffering, a tower of strength for the fugitive. Be eyes to the blind, and a guiding light unto the feet of the erring. Be an ornament to the countenance of truth, a crown to the brow of fidelity, a pillar of the temple of righteousness, a breath of life to the body of mankind, an ensign of the hosts of justice, a luminary above the horizon of virtue, a dew to the soil of the human heart, an ark on the ocean of knowledge, a sun in the heaven of bounty, a gem on the diadem of wisdom, a shining light in the firmament of thy generation, a fruit upon the tree of humility."

Curiosity, courage and compassion would be my three favored ones.

Curiosity to have a drive to learn and discover new things. Courage to face risk and hardship, but also to provide the determination to remain curious and compassionate despite the work it requires. Compassion to have a drive to use one's courage and knowledge to help society and fellow human beings and keep a certain tenderness and affection for humans as individual and as societies.

Kindness is a big deal. Its always best to be kind whenever possible.

The caveat is you can only be kind to the point of denying your personal morals.

If people step beyond the bounds of common human decency and your personal ideals of tolerance, the result is standing up for what you personally believe is just and moral.

Sometimes people don't like that. Freedom of thought, care for all animals, life and ecosystems is the Boundary of my of kindness and tolerance. I will continue to attempt to be kind in solving my moral issues concerning these issues. But if you can't understand or greedily deny or fight, I will walk over the same ground until the just action is taken.

Thanks for sharing. I agree - being kind does not mean you just let people do whatever they want - especially if they are harming themselves or others. You would take all measures so they don't create more negative karma for themselves which only leads to more personal suffering in the long-run.

All the best!

My core values are freedom of speech, truthfulness and compassion.
I also try to be humble, but find it particularly challenging when confronted by egotistical people.

I have found that is the best time to practice being humble. Everyone knows a bleating sheep when they see one.

Yes - humility can be tough. But it does say "The meek shall inherit the earth."

Peeked at the list just see if it had the virtues I consider most important in my life on the list. It more or less did (well, omitting all the virtues that most seem to consider "negative" anyway), but not in the precise words in all cases.

What was conspicuously (and unsurprisingly) missing from the list is much in the way of ecocentric virtue. There's no mention of sustainability or modesty or simplicity. No mention of humility or reciprocity or interdependence. That's fine. Lists aren't perfect.

Thanks for the input. Yes - I personally would agree with you about the exclusions such as humility. A lot of people would not put it high on their lists but I guess we're all different.

Even focusing on a couple of those values is a worthwhile practice - hard enough to remember 29 of them let alone practice cultivating them all - that would probably make you qualify as a saint :)

Cheers!
