What are your favourite musicals?

Ori

Angel slayer
Obviously Singin in the rain, it's a classic.
And The nightmare before christmas.

Feathers in Hair

World's Tallest Hobbit
I love "Singing in the Rain"! Donald O'Conner was one of my loves growing up, when my family would borrow that movie from the library about once a month. I also adore "Les Mis", despite my sister and her choral group trying to ruin it for me. (Under the guise of it being the one that everyone wanted to sing for their recital- as if they weren't trying to ruin it for me, I'm sure!) While 'young Cosette' 's "Castle on a Cloud" speaks to me of the way a child's imagination can soothe unhappy times, I also enjoy trying to keep up with the male leads, particularly Javert's crisis of faith
" And must I now begin to doubt,
Who never doubted all these years?
My heart is stone and still it trembles
The world I have known is lost in shadow.
Is he from heaven or from hell?
And does he know
That granting me my life today
This man has killed me even so?"
I also cry when it comes to the ending chorus.

"VALJEAN, FANTINE, EPONINE
Take my hand
And lead me to salvation
Take my love
For love is everlasting
And remember
The truth that once was spoken
To love another person
Is to see the face of God.

CHORUS
Do you hear the people sing
Lost in the valley of the night?
It is the music of a people
Who are climbing to the light.

For the wretched of the earth
There is a flame that never dies.
Even the darkest night will end
And the sun will rise.

They will live again in freedom
In the garden of the Lord.
They will walk behind the plough-share,
They will put away the sword.
The chain will be broken
And all men will have their reward.

Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing?
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring
When tomorrow comes!"
I also enjoy a few songs from "Jesus Christ, Superstar". As Zephyr mentioned, "Damned for all Time" sends me shivering every time I hear it. "Hosanna" also effects me a lot, since my sister is renowned for her ear for the tune, while I've got the ear for the lyrics, and this was first revealled when I was the one to catch the progression of " Hey JC, won't you smile at me?" to " Hey JC, you're alright by me" to "Hey JC, won't you fight for me?" to " Hey JC, won't you die for me?"

Citizen Mod
Those Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living And Became Mixed Up Zombies?!! (1964) Dir: Ray Dennis Steckler (First Monster Musical)

Dancer In the Dark

Starring: Bjork ( Dark Anti-Musical)

FANTASIA and FANTASIA 2

Dist: Disney

If you have Surround Sound this is a great Demo Musical to impress friends.

HAIRSPRAY

Dir: John Waters

The movie, not the musical.

Haven’t seen the musical

Jesus Christ Superstar

Prod: Andrew Lloyd Weber

I prefer any version (Original Motion Picture, Broadway, England release, JCS 2000). The music and concept carry this one.

The Last Waltz

Aritsts: The Band, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, The Staple Singers

MAD MONSTER PARTY

From the makers of Rudolph and Santa Clause Is Coming To Town. This quirky animated horror movie features Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller… singing!!!!!

Phantom Of the Paradise

Dir: Brian De Palma

Great songs written by Paul Williams

Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band

Yes, it stars Peter Frampton and the Bee Gees but so what!?! You have to give some credit to a musical that tries to turn Beatle songs into a cohesive whole.

Sound Of Music

Starring Julie Andrews

Watch Victor Victoria, then watch the Sound Of Music right after it with a straight face.

TOMMY

The Movie not the musical

Ann Margaret, Jack Nicholson, the Who, Elton John, Tina Turner, Oliver Reed, need I go on?

Willie Wonka & The Chocolate Factory

Starring Gene WILDER!!!!!!

These songs are with you till the day you die.

Cannibal: The Musical

Trey Parker and Matt Stone

The movie is a bit tame and dated compared to their future achievements but it does highlight the musical aspects of these two talents.

GAY PURREE

(1962) Dir: Chuck Jones

Starring the voices of Judy Garland, Robert Goulet and Red Buttons

Great music, unique animated style and a fun storyline.

How to Stuff A Wild Bikini

(1965)

Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello

One of the many musical beach movies starring everyone’s favorite heart throbs. Pray you were too young to remember these films and that paradise on earth is going to be like that.

INTO THE WOODS

Bernadette Peters and Joanna Gleason-WOW!!

Loses momentum during the last act but the songs emotionally carry you through.

TALKING HEADS STOP MAKING SENSE

Probably the most intimate concert musical you will ever watch.

WATTSTAX

This is a documentary about the 1972 Watts Summer Festival, which culminated in a day long concert at a sold out Los Angeles Coliseum. The concert was headlined by Issac Hayes and the support acts included Rufus Thomas and his daughter Carla, the Bar Kays and the Staple Singers. The film also features commentary by many African Americans who comment on how things were in Watts since the riots that tore the city apart seven years earlier.

Beatles: The Yellow Submarine

Wasn’t their real voices but the animators managed to capture the style of their music quite artistically.

XANADU

(1980) Fred Astaire, Olivia Newton John

Pure unadulterated 80’s CRAP!!!

I loved it.

SPINAL TAP

Dir: Rob Reiner

Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer and Michael McKean

They write their own material for this film and show just how far a mockumentary can go (those who enjoyed this would enjoy the RETURN OF SPINAL TAP film).

TRUE STORIES

Dir: David Byrne

This film combines the musical talents of Talking Heads and wraps it around an entertaining story about the residents of rural local Texas town.

Mary Poppins, my kids loved it and so did I. It's just sooo surreal...................

oh, thats a good one. You can be 3 or 300 years old, and this film appeals to all and has a diffrent point of view for many generations. Even the great Wizard of Oz scares little children.

I will definitely have to say Les Mis is at the top... who can beat songs like "Bring Him Home" or "Castle on a Cloud". I've never been brought to tears as I was when I saw it in London. WOW. Highly recommend seeing that cast perform it.. they're awesome.

I've seen Phantom more times than I can count, and it NEVER gets old. It's a classic.. hands down.

HIGHLY recommed seeing Elton John/Tim Rice's "Aida". The music is incredible.. you will be very entertained.

And yes, I go for some classic cheese, too. I love me some "Music Man" every once in a while, and I'm not ashamed;)

Has anyone seen "Wicked"? I want to see it so badly.. want to know what people think of it.
