What country would you move to permanently?

I would like to try living in Germany, I like German people, their attitude towards friends and life can be quite fun.

Since childhood I have always been fascinated by Egypt and still do to this day.
I decided I would be Egyptian when I was small :)

Probably either Australia because the accent is hot or California because I always wanted to see if it's like on TV :D

I've thought about Australia. Same language, somewhat similar cultures, and from what I've read, the climate is similar to my beloved humid hellhole of North Carolina. Can't stand to be too cold.

But, barring a catastrophic meldown of the government or economy, I don't see myself leaving for too long.

Where are you coming to this conclusion? I'm just seeing some folks picking Australia and then a bunch of oppressive socialist big brother states :p

If anything people are moving away.

Edit: And as for the people who dig Australia, I have a feeling it's for reasons other than the economy...

See the link.
I recognized the popular choices as among the countries ranked higher (or at least near) the USA .
Here's a more up-to-date link:

Note that the US has fallen behind Canada, New Zealand & Australia in this measure of economic liberty.
Even lefties love the benefits of capitalism.

Yes, but do you really think economic freedom is running through people's heads when they made the choice? I'd think that things like culture, language, and climate would have a much larger bearing, and the one post that said anything about economic advantages (the OP) was in support of a single payer health care system. Looks like a pure coincidence from here.

Edit: Lol, the Heritage Foundation? Seriously?

Probably Canada since I like moose, eh. :)

Edit: Also Australia since I think that is a really neat place too.

If you find fault with the Heritage Foundation's & The Wall St Journal's method of measuring economic liberty, then please post your critique or an alternative.
(To just snicker at the name is weak.) As for why posters would move to places with more such liberty, I speculate that it results in stronger economies. People of means
are generally more fun to be around than the desperately poor & oppressed.....better food, vibrant arts, nicer cities, more recreational activities, fewer famines, etc, etc.

Well, I would never move to anywhere expecting it to be absolutely permanent, but some countries I would really like to live in for some undisclosed amount of time would include Costa Rica, Venezuela, Chile, Canada, South Africa, Congo, Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Pakistan, India, Thailand, Japan, Australia, Russia, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Portugal and Spain.

I almost moved to Canada back when the draft was on & my lottery number was 34.
I'm glad Nixon canceled it in the nick of time. Crossing the border is a pain now,
since the American side is chock full of bullying louts who love security theater.

Ugh, don't remind me. I'm heading up to Vancouver in a few days and EVERY time I cross the border I get "randomly" searched.

Try driving a large truck with an enclosed utility body full of tools & machinery.
I got held spread eagle at machine gun point once in front of my wife & friends.
(The guard told me "my hands can kill" as the reason for the precaution.) At
least it makes for a great story. Do you think my Hawaiian shirts are the root
of the problem?

Well duh, definitely the shirt. Can't really blame them in that case.

e: But no seriously, crossing the WA-Canadia border is a huge pain in the *** and I am lucky I'm aware enough to not try smuggling.

It may be the vest made of TNT and and det cord that's causing the problem.

I'd recommend wearing a thong bikini brief and a mesh half shirt. If they still insist on searching you, it shouldn't take as long.

Ah! The sage advice of a seasoned traveler...thanx!
I'll also ask them if they know Jesus & about their insurance needs.

Yes this is different from vacation.

Thanks God. I am too rooted into religion. So sorry if i am turning the thread into religion :)

If I could I'll be moving around the places where my prophet and the members of his hose hold have lived and have their shrines. Peace be upon them.
