What do you dislike about Capitalism?

The fact that those who have done nothing feel that are being cheated out of the rewards that those who have worked hard receive.

That people think it's a flawless fix all and that child labor and similar exploitation in third world countries builds good character.

See, I can play that retarded game too. :D

Exploitation inherent in the drive to maximize profits.

When profits are the goal, then everything else can be sacrificed.... safety, well-being, ecosystem health and culture.

I don't think it has to be this way... but somewhere along the line money became the end-goal and not just the token of exchange. Greed became good.

Indeed. This would be the quickest way to sum up my feelings on the subject.

LoL... there are what, 2 communist countries left... ?
Egads.... :D

wa:do

List of Communist Countries:

-People's Republic of China- 1-1.2 billion people
-Vietnam- 80-85 million
-Loas- 5-6 million
-North Korea- 20-25 million
-Cuba- 10-12 million

That means Communism rules approx 1/7 of the Worlds population.

Not only that but there are countries leaning towards Communism, the extreme left or have Communist threats.

Such as:

-India- Large Maoist groups called Naxalites based in the jungles and the Communist Party of India have strength in some regions such as Calcutta
-Nepal- Maoist forces have controlled the gov't before and are disputing the fact that Maoist can't vote
-Venezuela- Left leaning leader (Hugo Chavez) who is trying to become a permanent leader of the gov't/country. Also companies and etc are frequently nationalized
-Bolivia- Basically the same as Venezuela
-Libya- Left leaning leader. Not really sure thought if it could potentially become Communist because of it's Muslim population

Communism might not be as grand or as powerful as it used to be during the Cold War, but, it still is there and has the potential to have a resurgence.

Can it not be said though that China is a somewhat ugly hybrid of both Capitalism and Communism? I mean, China does have an upper-class, and they trade a lot. Y' know, the Chinese workers get oppressed by both big Government and big business, all the while making goods for mostly Capitalist countries.

While economically speaking the People's Republic of China is indeed capitalist, the gov't is still communist and communism still has a lot of power. The gov't is still very authoritarian and the Communist Party of China is guaranteed control of the gov't. They only use a capitalist market system because they know the communist economic system is highly insufficient.

Hardly an inspiring number and almost entirely due to one nation who is only communist in theory right now.

India threat from the Naxalites is more one of succession than take over.
Hugo is more of a boogy-man than a real threat IMHO.

The list is hardly inspiring in terms of threat. Most Maoist groups are dissatisfied ethnic groups that can be dealt with proactively by providing them some freedoms and autonomy.
The fact that capitalism as practiced in these countries fosters "Maoist" rebellion is symptomatic of the inherent flaws of the system.

People don't feel that Maoism is a good idea because they are happy, healthy and prosperous.

An addition: Cyprus elected a communist president.

Nepal actually has two seemingly democratic communist parties vying for power. The Maoists and the "Leninists."

I dislike many aspects of it. The real issue of mega bucks meaning people can do essentially what ever they want, i.e. exploit workers, exploit tax loopholes, rent a lawmaker, call the shots, and soak up the vast majority of the wealth leaving very little for those of us who actually run and support society.
The misguided godhood of materialism is another. Big houses, big cars, big TVs, and all at the expense of the environment and health of society and workers. All just to make a buck.
Workplace laws, rather the lack of, is another big issue. No one should work over 40, 50, 60, 90+ hours a week and be living a range of poverty to just making it. A single parent should never be forced to choose from feeding the family or paying bills. Actually no should ever have to make that decision. The total lack of paid sick time off and no paid vacations is also terrible. But this is America, we got stuck with the belief that you have to work hard, long days, and work yourself to the bone to have any worth. Really I guess it isn't directly the fault of capitalism for labor laws, it is the lack of regulations on a Capitalist society that allows for a lack of labor laws to exist.
The rich exploiting the poor to make them more poor and earn millions by doing it. AIG, Goldman Sachs, and the rest of them, to hell with them. People threatened Senators over the healthcare bill, so where are the lynch mobs considering these people made millions of dollars because people where loosing their homes, jobs, savings, and retirement funds?

How does a worker ever get exploited? If they agree to do a job for said amount of pay, they profit, they aren't exploited. If they did not find the job profitable, they would never agree to do that job! How then, if workers always profit, are they exploited?

Workplace laws, rather the lack of, is another big issue. No one should work over 40, 50, 60, 90+ hours a week and be living a range of poverty to just making it.
Huh? What if I WANT to work more then 40 hours a week? All those laws do is prevent people who want to work more and get more money from actually doing so.

Here we see the an actual instance of exploitation. Corporations like AIG and Goldman Sachs get bailed out by the government with our money. And as for the healthcare bill, it will only help the insurance companies, the very same companies that literally helped write and lobbied for the bill. However, this is NOT Free Market, this is Corporatism, or the government interfering in the economy for the sake of Big Business. Free Marketers are OPPOSED to this.

Reason, and reason again
Having a choice does not imply one is free of exploitation. At this moment anyone living in Europe, the Americas, or most of East Asia has the right to leave their country behind; that doesn't mean gays living in the US "choose" to have the law discriminate against them simply by remaining a part of that organization.

From a Marxian perspective, workers are only free when they have a viable option to not work for someone else unless they want to.

Huh? What if I WANT to work more then 40 hours a week? All those laws do is prevent people who want to work more and get more money from actually doing so.

I don't see how you connected Wolf's point about someone working more than 50 hours a week but still suffering from poverty to restrictions on how much one can work.

The Heretic
In capitalism, let's say you make X's. You are paid 8 dollars per hour.

8 hours times 8 dollars = 64 dollars for you. You made 24 X's today. Each X is sold for $50.

The company you work sells all the X's you made. The company gets $1200. You get $64. You don't get $1136 that you produced.

It's just not the basic wage slavery in capitalism, but it's murder by capitalists and imperalists that are even worse.

Here is a list my friend complied of Capitalism's victims, totaling about 1 billion killed.

And capitalists claim communism has killed 100 million, when their own ideology kills that amount with a decade.

If capitalism is so bad, why don't socialists get together on a large scale & form a community structured on socialist principles?
That would be permissible in the US. I imagine a more sophisticated & larger version of a commune.

Because socialists are like Libertarians... they work best in small groups. ;)
