What do you personally think of Paganism?

I like a lot of Pagan groups.

I don't like the brooms, fluffy bunnies, and things that some people do in order to be as stereotypically witchy/pagan as possible, though.
It's a pretty varied group though, but as a whole I like it. My main concern is with the anti-Christian sentiment a lot of people hold. Thankfully I've not seen it here amongst the Pagans. :)

Yes, cause I know people who do that, and while I can see the fun in it, it's not what Paganism is about. Paganism is a category of religions in actuality, ancient religions.
Definitely true, I agree.

Paganism shouldn't be cheapened by following fakelore and historic, fanciful claims like using a broom because there are stories of witches using brooms, for example, that bugs me a fair bit. If it's a bit of fun, I don't mind though. :D

Not my thing...

Although I remember seeing a graphic historical picture of a 'witch' 'flying' on her broom in ecstasy... *ahem*

:D

I don't understand it, honestly.

Mainstream religions I get... kinda.
No religion at all I get (obviously).

... but choosing to belong to a minority religion, and one that still gets vilified a fair bit to boot? It kinda seems like the worst of both worlds to me.

To me, paganism is about the relationship we have with the land around us. I'm an atheist pagan, meaning that I get my spirituality from Nature without resorting to the supernatural. The physical world is pretty spectacular as it is.

I don't want to step on toes... but I would say that Wiccans bother me quite a bit. Just because a lot of them (not all) are just hardcore harry potter/charmed/twilight fans...who think that Wicca=Witchcraft=Paganism, etc etc. People who jump aboard for all the sparkly stuff and spell casting stuff without understanding anything or taking the time to understand what the religion is actually about. Lots of tweens, etc. People rebelling against their Christian families, etc.

They ruin it for everyone else. Really.

But as for Paganism in and of itself, I have no issues with it.... I mean, it has it's issues, but it's alright. I follow a number of pagan practices, myself.

I used to be a Wiccan, actually, in my teenage years. The difference was that although my religious philosophy changed, my style of dress, my speech patterning, and etc. did not change. But I also believed blindly that Wicca was an actual old religion of pagan Europe and somehow magically been passed down from Gerald Gardner into the modern era, and that the Burning Times was directly related to modern Wicca.

In any case, I don't mind Wicca, but as long as they are intelligent enough to understand that much of modern Wicca is really an amalgamation of European neo-Paganism with very liberal and free perceptions.

For those who aren't familiar with the term, this entire description is generally what people call "fluffy bunny".

"Fluffy Bunny, or Fluffbunny, is a pejorative expression used since at least 2001 in Wicca (and in Neopaganism generally) to refer to adherents of the religion who are thought to be superficial or faddish. They are considered to dislike darker elements and emphasize goodness, light, eclecticism and elements taken from the New Age movement, or follow it as a fad."

Well I don't practice Wicca, and wasn't necessarily speaking of Wicca, but of like Greco-Roman Paganism, Egyptian, Norse, Celtic, etc.

Yes, and much of neo-constructed older religions is still largely practiced by a minority.

It's the reason why I dislike the name 'pagan' and 'paganism' because the religious ideas of the Greco-Roman religion was different than that of the Egyptians, or the religions of the Amerindians (the aboriginal inhabitants of North, Central and South American), Polynesians, etc. 'Paganism' is another lumping together of differing spiritual systems that may or may not be similar culturally, socially, ethically or morally, etc.

Yeah, but there are pagans who use "fluffy bunny" too loosely. Reconstructionists especially love throwing the term at anyone who isn't in their circle.

True, but there's always those few people that fit it to the letter...scary people they are.

I'm into Egyptian reconstruct and I admit some Egyptian Pagans do throw the term "fluffy bunnies" at Wiccans and such, but I personally do not. I actually like the term Pagan covering such a diverse spectrum of beliefs, it helps unite us together. The mocking title given to us by our enemies has become our greatest treasure as far as the unity of "Pagans".
