What do you think of paying to hear a religious speaker?

The Dali Lama was here today. There was a charge of €25 to go and hear him. Tickets were sold in a flash.

Depends entirely upon where the money for admittance goes.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
No different with a speaker than it is with a singer. If you think a speaker is a superstar of sorts then you will most likely pay money to go see him/her live. Nothing new or unusual. If people happen to enrich themselves via the masses than its really the problem of those who actually pay and contribute that is, if it is a problem for the person paying.

A symptom of modern society that confuses value and worth. As a marketing strategy, it is sound.

it should be free

If its not free, I would question his motives.

but in saying that, if he was asked to come and give a talk, then it would not be wrong for him to ask for money to help him with his travel expenses. Planes, accommodation, food etc all cost money...so money to cover such costs would not be wrong to provide him.
