There are some who listen to music while solving math problems. Then there are others who daydreams while taking a dump. :D What exactly do you do while contemplating?

Edit: Can the mods please move it in the General Discussion forum. See this is what happens when you think too much. lol

I don't do things while I contemplate. I contemplate while I do things.

Two disciples of a guru were in a courtyard performing their daily walking meditation. Both were smokers. The decided to ask the guru's permission after they were done meditating to smoke and meditate at the same time.

The next day, both showed up in the courtyard and began walking and meditating. One lit up a cigarette. The other angrily said, "Are you going to willfully disobey what the guru told us?"

The other said, "He gave me permission to do so."

The angry disciple said, "I asked he and angrily told me no."

The smoking disciple said, "How did you ask his permission?"

The angry one said, "I asked if I can smoke while I meditate."

The smoking one said, "You see? It's all in how you ask. I asked if I can meditate while I'm smoking."
I often contemplate while doing menial tasks that don't require much mental focus like when I'm delivering packages at work.

What's your definition of 'contemplating'?

I'm with @SalixIncendium on this one. I might think of math while driving or ponder some philosophical problem while cleaning the dishes. And, yes, I wonder about physics while taking a dump.

Otherwise mindless activities that require rather little concentration are ideal for thinking about other things.

The problems come when I am trying to contemplate one thing while also contemplating another.

That can be very dangerous. Just imagine you're operating a big machine in a big factory, and at the same time thinking about Kim Kardashian's big buns ... and then WHAM, the metal blades drop right over your fingers.

... and you could end up delivering them in the wrong address. lol

Great. Now I'm going to be imagining I'm operating big machinery in a big factory while thinking of Kim Kardashian's big buns and metal blades dropping on my fingers while I'm out delivering packages.

If I deliver to the wrong address today, that's on you. ;)

I don't, as one might expect , do much contemplating, such that many of my thoughts either come from an input of information (reacting to such) or so often just doing something else and where my mind is free to roam. And some seem to come whilst asleep, like many it seems.

In India I learned from Sai Baba about these 3 stages:
1) Concentration: To quieten the mind can be done by sitting silently, watching the breath going in and going out. Western mind is very outward going, hence sitting silently, and doing nothing is not easy for many, but this is a necessary step to succeed in the next 2 stages: contemplation and meditation

2) Contemplation: Having the mind (bundle of thoughts) stilled by concentration, then the next step is contemplation. Directing one's love towards one's guru or one's Higher Self or ...

3) Mediation: Being absorbed in contemplation with a stilled mind, gradually one enters the stage of meditation (the stage of "no thoughts")
