What Does It Mean to Say "God is Infinite"?

As I understand it, there are in mathematics an infinite number of infinities.

There is, for example, infinity, infinity + 1, infinity + 2, infinity + 3, and infinity + @SalixIncendium's horrifying lime-striped tuxedo, which he typically wears with pink sandals. And so on, infinity after infinity.

Now, the question is, "What does it mean to say 'God is infinite'?"

Does that mean there's an infinite god, an infinite god + one more infinite god, an infinite god plus two more infinite gods, etc?

Does it mean god has no beginning and no end?

Does it mean everything is god, since -- if something is not god, that would seem to imply that god has an end of some sort?

Most importantly, does it mean Salix has a infinite set of bad fashion choices to pick his next outfit from?
For me it's about the mind of God. The mind or capability of God to think and reason is infinite. We may assume that all things exist because of the mind of God. In other words all things immanent from the infinite mind of God.

So we are not God Himself, but sustained or exist because He wills it. If God were to hypothetically look away (so to speak) then we would cease. But, because He spoke all things into existence therefore the Word of God establishes or makes all things exist. In a sense therefore, the Word of God separates those possibilities (that God knows of) from the actualities -That is the things God decides should exist.

I will just wrap this up. Plain as a pie crust.. Do you like cinnamon? My ma gave the left over crust to roll in to a snake to bake. Cinnamon and sugar.. Fitted for the oven. Does Salix have a stomach?

I don't know about God but George Cantor is the reason that I can cross a room and reach the opposite wall while at the same time traversing half the distance, then half of half the distance, then half of half of half of half the distance, then, etc..

Ahhhhh.....so that's how it's done :)

It just dawned on me...
Fear of uncertainty about infinity drives humankind to religion !

Don't worry...
there's no direction or distance in which there is any such thing as infinity,
the Cosmos has absolutely no end.
Now...say your prayers and go to sleep, I'll rock your cradle.

Infinity is a strange concept, in abstract mathematics. Infinity is a valid concept. In science and applied maths, the study and measurement of the physical and natural, invoking infinity means something is terribly wrong.

I understand that God being infinite means that it is not bound by space-time and objects.

Two things.

First, we are assuming that God exists as part of a stable time loop, and the same for space. Which is why we cannot see God, along with the whole being inside the world thing.

Second, you say infinity you have to think in terms of infinity. That is, infinity x 2 is still infinity as is infinity / 2. An infinite set of numbers, say 1, 2, 3, 4... is still infinite whether it starts 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000... or 1/2, 1, 3/2, 2... This is why it is possible to say God is part of man's image, a less impressive set of infinite numbers is still a set of infinite numbers.

What it means, that God is infinite, means that God is everlasting, God has no beginning nor end, God is eternal.

Oh well...we all know that `God` can lift everything, can't `He` ?
Including space-time and objects !

Does it mean god has no beginning and no end?...................

I can say that God (of the Bible) has No beginning and has No end according to the Psalms.
So, that would mean the one-and-only God was 'before' the beginning of Creation.
Since God is infinite, then as we can count numbers both forwards and backwards forever and ever then, in that sense, we can comprehend forever and ever.

Salix? Have you got pics?

Yes, Infinite. Massive beyond our comprehension.

For instance, I feel sure that our Universe is tiny in comparison with the whole.......... tiny.......

Tiny in the way that we perceive an atom when compared to our (the) Universe. Of course we'll never get to realiose just how huge everything is.

And so, for a Deist who accepts that 'all is God' this does help to give a myopic view of just how big it all is. And it helps me to feel that all the atoms and energy that ever will have been in me will be ok........ it's all ok.

This is an interesting thread topic. A better illustration of multiple sizes of infinity is to point out that the set of positive integers is infinite, the set of all integers is infinite yet larger, the set of all rational numbers is infinite yet larger still, and the set of all real numbers is infinite and still larger. So, yes, the concept of the "infinite" can get weird.

If god is infinate, not bound by space and time, not material, does not make noise, and cannot see, what is god?

When you extract everything that we would use to define god, what exactly is left? What does infinite to a given person or object mean when we dont even have a term or idea of the thing thats supposed to be infinite.

Is it space?
