What does "religion" do for you?

What does religion do for you, most people don't follow the teacings, so what does labeling yourself with a religion do for you?

personaly I dont see the point of calling oneself religious unless one does follow the teachings ?
but yes true there are a lot of people who associate themselves with a faith for cultural reasons , in which case they feel that culturaly they belong to that religion .

to me there is nothing wrong with that , we each respond to our faith with varing degrees of understanding and comitment .

Some people combine their ethnicity with their religion, so they can sort of combine the two for whatever purpose, but what about people who just belong to a religion? Does it make you feel special? Is it basically a social club? Do you just do it because that's how you were raised?

me ?.....because there I feel at home , ...
there there is meaning to life :D

I consider those things to be harm done to society as a whole.

And you generalize this observation with the qualifier "religion"?

Is it possible that things are much more complex than we would like to think? I mean, it might not be such a simple... um... um... you know... it might be a lot more... uh... complex.

I was referring to religion, yes, so I don't understand what you're trying to argue here. Of course it's more complex than that. I was narrowing it down.

Religion gives me fellowship and strength. It gives me joy to sing hymns and inspiration to hear a sermon. It is spiritual food for the soul. It is a good feeling when you give to others and pray for the sick.

To spend time with people in your community is aways a good thing.

Sorry, miscommunication is a common phenomenon here. Religion is fairly complex. Thanks for attempting to narrow it down.

It gives some people a sense of purpose, but all it really does in the grand scheme of things is a whole lot of harm, for the most part.

ArcNinja,

Automobiles give people a faster way to travel, but all they "really do in the grand scheme of things is a whole lot of harm, for the most part".

Do you see how your statement is so faulty?

The leading cause of death among teenagers in America is car accidents; so should we outlaw cars? Of Course not!

Just because some people misuse automobiles via reckless driving, drunk driving, etc, doesn't mean that automobiles are the problem; its the people.

Religion is not necessarily the problem; its the people who misuse religion.

The difference here is that religion basically rules our government and (for a very long time) the education system, as well. There is a difference between "cars" and "car accidents," but then there is just "religion." Religion as a whole. It isn't a "misuse" of religion. If people kept religion to themselves, I would be perfectly fine with it.

Since we don't have a strikeout font here, I added some "tags." ;)

Basically. You don't have to be justified to have an opinion. :D

I wasn't aware that it was just atheists who had opinions.
I just love irony. :D

Yeah, that's what I said.

EDIT: I just realized that you took my fundamentalist comment wrong, so its not likely that you will read the sarcasm in THIS post either. So, in case I'm right about that. The above is intended sarcastically. Carry on.

Religion gives me a link to the past.

without religion i would feel like I popped into the universe one day with no purpose or meaning to my life.

I enjoy celebrations; religion is a way of celebrating the past and remembering where we came from.

Yes, that's completely understandable.
