What does your religion teach about alcohol/drugs?

Arav

In Jainism one cant have any Alcohal or Drugs AT ALL. They are very much looked down upon in Jainism because they skew your perspective and can cause bad things to occur. The tenth Anuvrat, or small vow, in Jainism is: 10. I will not use intoxicants like alcohol, hemp, heroin, etc.

So we Jains cant use any Alcohal or Drugs.

I drink on occasion, but usually just to enjoy a drink. I rarely drink enough to get a buzz, and I haven't been drunk in a long time. I use to get drunk a few times a week, but I just don't like doing it anymore. As for drugs, I like using several different types. I'm even going to get some spice today I gotta enjoy that while I can because it becomes illegal at the beginning of next year. Apparently it's ok if tobacco and alcohol kill millions a year, but spice kills a few people in comparison and they outlaw it.
But unlike the government, from a religious perspective use is ok, as long as one is being responsible and sensible about it.

As a person who gets drunk on occasion, I can't help but wonder how others view intoxication. I myself tend towards a "moderation is a virtue" standpoint, but I can't help but wonder about other opinions. Some religions seem to include the effects of drugs as part of their religious ceremonies and experiences....others prohibit them all together. How does your religion view alcohol and other drugs? Why do you think that they have that particular view? What is your personal stance?

My opinion:

The sin is not drinking, the sin is "drunkenness", which (like so many other sins like lust and gluttony) does not have a clear-cut definition. Having a drink or two is not sin. Jesus drank wine on many occasions, and His first miracle was creating more wine for a wedding party. Those people weren't just having one glass (or they wouldn't have known that they new wine was better quality than what ran out). That said, there were probably some people at that wedding feast that got drunk, and sinned while doing so.

Some of it has to do with intent: are you drinking to "drown your sorrows" or to lead you to sexual contact? To me, this is different from having a beer or two with friends while watching a game on TV. Also, people whose drinking progresses (ie. the more you drink, the more you want/need to drink) should avoid it altogether.

I think that the sin in itself is not that action of drinking however, it is the result of being drunk. if you have a couple drinks and you still act responsible, you are still a good example of Christ, you dont fight or cause unnecessary drama, you show respect and you can make good decisions - then by all means, feel free. however if when you are under the influence of alcohol, you become something that would not honor God and someone that is not respectable and you are unable to control your tongue and your actions - then drunk is a dangerous and sinful state for you to be in.
I think we should use disgression, know when it is appropriate, when it isnt and try to learn our own limits.
