The Hobbit.
I am one of those annoying people who could quote all of Bilbo and Gollum's riddles verbatim.

No, Radagast the Brown wasn't in the book and did not ride a sled pulled by rabbits.
The friend I saw it with called me a "Tolkien snob". I completely agreed and left the theater pointing that out a little too loudly.

Oof yeah Hobbit had lots of problems. Especially tonal problems and pacing problems. Lindsay Ellis did a couple great videos about it.

Wasn't a fan of the Hobbit, though I did like LoTR. Go figure. Not a fan of the Pirates franchise, Transformers, or some of the newer Tim Burton movies (like Alice in Wonderland or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), though I'm not unique in my disdain for any of those. :D

I do like movies a lot of people hated though, like The Haunting and Mothman Prophecies. Not to mention all the other ones that utterly fail, like Troll 2, Birdemic, Space Mutiny, The Room, etc etc.

Speaking of The Room, you guys should see The Disaster Artist if you haven't yet. It reminds me of Tim Burton's Ed Wood (one of Tim's good movies). :)

I wasn't a huge fan of The Force Awakens.

Return of the Jedi was terrible, especially when ewoks armed with stones and twigs defeated an army of stormtroopers with powerful weapons and advanced armour.

Avatar disappointed.

Was Jack Reacher a box office success? I'm struggling to finish that dog now.

Nobody's mentioned The English Patient yet?

I tried watching The Philadelphia Story and it took 5 sittings. Many other classics pall as well such as any Hitchcock flick and many larger than life productions like Cleopatra, Ben Hur, and The Ten Commandments.

Others have mentioned Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter. Didn't understand their popularity

Dirty Dancing.

Gladiator.

Titanic.

Any post-2000 Disney movie.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
I'd say the first Spider-Man movie. It was a hit, but it was actually turned out to be not what I expected from the previews.

I came in expecting an action packed film, and ended up watching a stupid chick flick.

I agree with those who mentioned 2001: A Space Odyssey. I've discussed this movie with ardent fans, and my sense is that those who really like this movie are cinema aficionados - either film students or wannabe critics who appreciate the film more on a purely visual level.

I felt similarly about Blade Runner. Fans like it because of the visual experience and the special effects, but I just couldn't get into it. It just seemed like a Pinocchio story to me.

It was similar with HAL in 2001. The whole idea of "machines coming alive" just seems like an overused plot device, even for science fiction.

Forrest Gump. I had heard so much about how wonderful it was supposed to be, by the time I saw it, I found it disappointing.
