What Happens When Facts Don't Matter Anymore?

There is so much bovine scatology making the rounds in the world via social media. How can we know what is true about events in the world?

If you automatically dismiss mainstream media sources, fact check organizations and other sources of data because they don't support your bias, what are you left with? How do you measure reality without the tools to do so?

What keeps us from being cut free from the real world if we reject all sources of information?

Always fact check, then fact check those facts as well, then fact check those facts too

And when that is done, reserve some skepticism

What happens when you already have bias and only fact check that which agrees with it?

If I didn't have a brain if my own, if take everything on media as truth just as I would in an unideal scenario taking medication just because the fact doctors and other sources say it works.

Fact check is fine for mathematics but not all topics can rely Just on that. Take trump's jokes. Most people take him seriously cause they already hate trump. Inappropriate jokes but jokes nonetheless.

That's probably why some don't care for things like politics. It's one-sided based on public "reviews."

Then you die faster than if you understand facts.
That is not what is happening IMHO. It is a fight about being right, power, resources, privilege and respect. Then there is feelings and that the world must make sense as I want it to make sense.

Nothing at all, basically. I totally fail to understand people who dismiss all the sources you mention but then think some random person/group on youtube, twitter, or whatever, absolutely knows the truth. If the world is so manipulated and/or biased that all mainstream media and fact check organizations are corrupted, then you've literally nothing left. Literally anything might be true unless you can personally check it in some objective way.

Choosing to believe just the groups that say things you like, seems like the epitome of self-delusion.

Buddha said delusion arises from inappropriate attention and is dispelled by appropriate attention, and delusion is usually slower to fade than passion or aversion. The like/dislike bias is pinpointed by the Hsin Hsin Ming as the source of inappropriate attention.
People will need to want to free themselves from delusion instead of remaining willfully ignorant. Eventually, the willful ignorance may fade and the individual in question will free themselves from their delusion, but clinging to their willful ignorance will probably prolong the process.

For many of the religious, willful ignorance
is a highest virtue.

Absolutely, although perfection will never be had.

Amen to that. Generally speaking, we are often our own worst enemy when it comes down to confirmation bias.

All the evidence points to inherent character flaws not jokes. The evidence is first hand by watching him, listening to him, seeing what he does.

My point exactly.

Shrugs. I'm indifferent to it. People have far worse character than he. His actions on the other hand.

I never thought there was any real disagreement over basic "facts." It's the interpretation and the conclusions that people argue about.

Even something as innocuous as the weather report can be filled with opinionated rubbish. They might say, "It'll be a gorgeous day tomorrow, 75° and sunny," but all I really want are the basic facts. I don't care about their opinion about what they think a "gorgeous day" will be - especially since we haven't had a decent rain in months and we're way, waaaaay below average. Yet another day without rain is far from "gorgeous," in my opinion. Nevertheless, I can't fault them on a factual basis, though I can criticize and question their opinions.

Facts, like opinions, prevariations, & falsehoods
have always mattered. But they'll always be at
war with each other. This is nothing all that new.

:) To begin with we have to make a connection to the world in the first place, and I think it helps to have a loving but disciplined childhood followed by some problems and cold water in the face. I suppose some healthy friendships are good, too. We start out disconnected not connected. That's what I think.
