What happens when the afterlife is only Hell?

Sha'irullah

Being promoter of counterculture I have realized that so many religions do their best to provide an afterlife that is peaceful and pleasurable for mankind and our escape from suffering. What if heaven or the afterlife in general is not a place of unlimited happiness but of unlimited or greater misery?
Without action our lives can easily become miserable on earth but that is due to the nature of things as without appropriate actions one cannot survive and will inevitably suffer. What if the afterlife is a place of greater suffering and we are all predestined to go to a hellish afterlife.
Many early pagan cults did not promote a blissful afterlife but a sorrowful one much like that of Sumerian, Mesopotamian, Canaanite, Arabian, Babylonian and early Hellenic cults. The concept of a blissful afterlife is not exactly old and is relatively new when compared to the amount of gloomy concepts of the afterlife.

What would you say to a religion which teaches that the afterlife is eternal suffering? Or in short, "Hell for Everybody".

I would say, "But aside from that, how's you're day going?"

Maybe it was a form of psychology (what isn't though, huh) where you promote making this earth and this life a heaven... in contrast to focusing on a heaven while weeping and whining during this life.

I have tried working this thought out though and I cannot determine which is more productive. To live in heaven to end up in hell or live in hell to end up in heaven. Which promotes a better society?

I cannot see the exact measurable qualities to living a life and ending up in a heaven to be honest. I learnt this in my time as a Muslim. There is nothing great about removing emphasis on this life.

Perhaps it is due to the fact that if one believes he will enter eternal paradise after death he may not care so much about his current life opposed to a person believing he will go to hell after death so he will stride to make his life on earth beautiful.

I always think it best to think of a next life as representative of how you treat this life and reflective of what you put out into the world. Just as well to live this life as if it's all there will ever be and if you do your best any afterlife or a return trip will be what it will be. Definitely to see this life and this world in a negative light, exaggerating and embellishing suffering or fixating on only the transitory nature of what is good, pleasurable, joyful, etc. - doesn't benefit us here or presumably a next destination.

I have always held the opinion that this life will only be filled with constant suffering due to the human inability to coexist. So the only way in which one can create a better life here is to understand the the inability to help others is actually making a stride to ruin others. Without taking action we will become unprogressive and make our life harder. You can best call my views as Extreme Progressivenism.

As a great man once told me, "YOLO *******!".

There's no reason to believe in it.

Human consciousness rejects such a scenario as inferior to many other possible outcomes, and this doubly fails to stand the test of reason once you consider that our consciousness is the product of God's own consciousness.

Funny you say these things to me when I strongly believe in subjective idealism. The issue though is that you are asserting that god is benevolent while I am not. I truthfully believe that god is not benevolent int he slightest bit. It is constantly fixated upon our suffering and if an afterlife exist I cannot conclude that a blissful one awaits us.

The most disturbing part is that man can all live together, and have one hella non ending party where everyone can come, and every single person would most likely live longer, be much more happy and not soul would go with out anything, specially food.

In Indiana, they started a free restaurant, if you cant pay for your meal, you simply help out for an hour or two, peal some tators, do some dishes, etc.
Those that can pay, stick a donation in an envelope and leave.
There is no prices on the menu's.
It is completely self supporting and took off so well because they have left over funds to donate to other help areas, more and more of these type restaurants are opening in other states too.

Do this type of thing world wide, we could all eat and not even have to worry about a thing, other than if its going to rain tomorrow and spoil the upcoming horseshoes match, that I will win :D

Depends. Will I be able to torment, torture and kill? Because I got a score to settle with some people. I mean, there's not going to be law enforcement and prisons, is there? Lol.

Imagine the afterlife being a place of torment. Now imagine every politician being strapped to a table and being lied to by their staff. Torture for both parties because we know damn well politicians are ugly and Reagan did not contribute any more

Oo, somebody is bossy today :p. Do ya need a lolly to make you jolly?

Ok for the sake of description yes you will be able to torture and kill since it would fit into the paradigm of a misanthropic deity and no there will be no popo except for the aeons stirring the pots of boiling humans and skinning Julia Roberts alive.
