I'm thinking it will be one of the following topics;

• 'What is wrong with people who live upside down on the earth?'
• 'What is wrong with people who have soulless avatars?'
• 'What is wrong with people who shorten their names?'
• 'What is wrong with people who cannot prove they are actually people, but are just user accounts on a religious forum?'

I apologise for resorting to sarcasm in a thread that decries the use of sarcasm. I sincerely hope this does not cause an infinite loop of regression.

Hope you're well. I'm against using sarcasm to bully someone but I don't think there's anything wrong with friendly sarcasm.

The hadith isn't referring to sarcasm..the scholars have said that it's referring to saying something that's not true or deceiving people to make them laugh. The prophet muhammad (phub) used to joke but he never lied. He actually did use some sarcasm

Hasan radiallahu 'anhu said: That a certain old woman came to the Prophet and requested him to pray to Allah to make her enter Paradise. The Prophet said, "O mother of so and so! No old woman shall enter into paradise." The narrator says that on hearing this the old woman went back weeping. The Prophet said to the people around him to go and tell the old woman that she would not enter into Paradise as an old woman. [At-Tirmidhi] Then he recited the verse:

"Verily we! We have created those (maidens) by a creation and have made them virgins, loving, of equal age."[Al-Qur'an 56:35-37]

So the prophet was being sarcastic here he wasn't lying.She will not enter Paradise as a old lady but she will be much younger in Paradise.

Responding to the title, which asks about sarcasm - there isn't necessarily anything wrong with them. Sarcasm is appropriate when someone repeatedly attempts to insult you while demonstrating a complete lack of understanding of the subject under discussion.

I see that you don't understand the concept of sarcasm. As perhaps one of the most sarcastic posters on RF, I know that sarcasm does not rely on lies to make poisoned barbs. Sarcasm uses the truth to get its point across. With sarcasm, in its purest form, what is said is not what is meant, and relies on the inherent understanding of the listener/reader to detect the irony - hence humor.

In person even, sarcasm isn't so easy to detect, as one has to know the person making the comment BECAUSE they sound like they are merely stating what they believe to be the truth. Often the voice used or the intonation is the only clue that something is completely sarcastic. Trust the king of sarcasm on RF.

For example, if you hear me sounding like Kermit the Frog with a Pakistani accent you can be almost certain that whatever I am saying is meant sarcastically.

I have found myself having to label sarcasm on the forums. Admittedly this takes away from some of its effectiveness, but I have had several occasions where people took it as a serious comment and ran with it...

A right? I wouldn't put it in the category of a 'right'. But sure, ask away. People are allowed to find your approach questionable. Personally, I have no issue with it. I hate to dare correct Muhammad, but questioning only really helps alleviate ignorance if you use the answers to challenge your own pre-existing beliefs. The question itself does nothing, and the process CAN be counter-productive.



Would you mind defining what a 'lie' is to your mind? If I said, for example, that a rainbow is made up of seven colours, am I lying? What if I suggested the sea was as wild as a hellcat? Lie? Neither are actually true. What if I pretend to be a camel and let my children ride around on me? Also not true, right? Sarcasm, assuming that is what you mean, relies heavily on the ability of the audience to recognize intent. Trust me on this, using sarcastic wit on a three year old is wasted effort. Their brains think far too literally to understand the humour.

There's usually nothing wrong with the people making the sarcastic remarks, but rather with the generally insipid, vacuous tripe that they're lambasting via humor, since such posts rarely deserve a serious reply.

People in general. I know a company who puts a fake sign on public street in-front of their company "2 hour parking - so and so company" for 7 straight years they did that or more.
