What is it like to be an atheist?

Less fear.
Less guilt.
Better sex.
Sleep in on Sundays.
I don't have to hate someone who has done nothing wrong.
I don't have to force myself to believe things that don't make sense.

Honestly the main difference between you as a theist and me as an atheist is i believe in one less god.

No more hadephobia, or fear of hell. That is one totally unnecessary phobia. I can understand arachnophobia as those little critters are real and they bite.

somehow i feel less bounded by the religious rules. i feel i can be more open to many things that once were not suitable to my belief, and i think i must have more openness than i have now :)

a bit out of topic.... how to deal with fear of hell? because all that in my head is "Pascall Wager"

I don't think many people have an easy time dealing with the fear of hell. I certainly didn't, it took me a good couple of years. But it'll get better.

Pascals Wager is stupid. To fulfill it you have to believe in every single god every invented just to be on the safe side. That and no god worth his salt would be stupid enough to fall for the old "i'm believing just in case" routine.

yeah i think i must start accepting my position, learning to let it go and put a lot more efforts on the other things in my life... this fear kinda destroying my life since religion was once everything to me.

about pascall wager... what's in my mind is that i wanna go on a journey to learn about many religious beliefs, hoping that i will find something as a basis to wage everything on that choice. i don't think of believing many deities...it is whether i will stay as non believer or put all my faith in my newfound belief...

If I had a god to believe in...what would be it's name...girl or boy god ?
Would it be in the skies above...or in the molten slag beneath us ?
I wonder if it would tempt me with succulent aromas and flavors.
Maybe a fig or a plum would do, until carrion filled my mouth.
I do eat meat, I shouldn't, but I love a good steak, something to do with fire !
Maybe that's a clue as to where my god would be, if I had one.
Sooooo...I'll just be content with the winds of the spirits,
those breezes from which all inner emotion comes.
And I'll be amazed at the miracles and/or disasters that cometh with them.

hey Ismail,
As to:
"...I have never been an atheist before"
~
Think for a minute.......you were born as one.
~
Or did someone already say that !!...twice doesn't hurt.

I am just curious because I have never been an atheist before.

being an atheist is exactly like being anyone else, until someone finds out you're an atheist.

once the word gets out you cant even catch a smoke break without someone lookin out for your soul. (at least that's in my limited experience here in the southeastern united states.)

my suggestion (if you ever find yourself with a lack of belief in god): subscribe to ignosticism. the time it'll take you to explain what you're talking about will give you the window you need to think of something really important you should be doing elsewhere at the time.

In addition to what other have noted, I also seem to have a lot more zeal for this life as an atheist, than when I was a Christian.

Well I normally drink my coffee at Starbucks, and eat my pizza at Pizza Express. when push comes to shove I will probably be a supporter of Freud over Jung.
I wear navy blue socks most of the time, and I occasionally have a smoke.
oh and I also think that evolution is one of the basic characteristics of life.

I've never been anything but an atheist. (Although I experimented with religion as a teen I was never truly convinced - which is why I consider myself a lifelong atheist). So I honestly have no other frame of reference. It feels normal to me. *shrug*

I used to be a recovering Christian, but I suppose as I got more and more into space and physics, I put more and more faith into the power of my mind rather than the power "God.'

At some point I realized that religion isn't needed to explain anything and is simply extra baggage.

Was never really that religious anyways despite being forced into just about everything one can conceive of that is "Christian."

I read too much as a kid.
