Arachne challenged the goddess into a weaving contest. She won but she insulted the gods, realistically depicting the gods' infidelities and depravities. According to Ovid's version of the event, Arachne hung herself after Minerva (Athena) destroyed her work and loom. Her transformation into a spider occurred after her death.
