What is our purpose here in this life

Are we here to live life to the fullest ?
Are we here to help others and be kind ?
Are we here to indulge in all pleasures as possible?
Are we here to pursue religion,God,other? Why?
Are we here to achieve all wisdom possible?

hey, Roli.

my faith tells me that i am here to love, commune with, and remember God; to interact with others in good cheer and blessing, and to alleviate suffering where i can; and to respect myself and look closely on what is in my heart so that i do not offend God, nor think unrighteously about others. i believe that all of these 'commandments' are very much linked, and that i am expected to fulfil them in thought, word, and action.

Simple answer: yes. It's as simple as that to me.

We are here as a result of reproduction. What we choose to do with our lives depends greatly upon what we choose to value. Our values come from all over the place: from our culture, our family, our instincts, our personal experience, and our reason/reflection etc.

It is firmly obvious that our purpose in life is to adore Girls On Trampolines!

But when that is not practical, then in the meantime we should pursue our bliss, find our excellence, be true to ourselves, become what we are, etc. Those are all ways of saying the same thing.

Is there one single purpose to life that everyone is supposed to fulfill, or does each individual have thier own purpose?

Hi, Roli! :)

In the Baha'i view, our purpose in this life is twofold:

- As invididuals, we are to acquire the spiritual virtues we'll need both here and in the Next Life.

- In aggregate, we are to carry forward an ever-advancing, spiritually-based civilizaiton.

And the purpose of religion is to show us HOW to go about this!

Best,

Bruce

i think it's both. in my faith, we all have a three-fold responsibility to God, to our neighbors, and to ourselves to live righteously and with remeberance.

and of course every person is special and can do things no other person can do. we can follow His commandments for us, and through doing so, hopefully be more aware of our own purpose and skills to be used while here.

For LDS it is to gain a physical body, to learn to make good choices, gain experience, and to show that we can faithfully obey God's commandments.

Greetings. To be, to become, and realize who we are coupled with work towards fulfillment of all within the unity of universal fulfillment. Love is the basic.

In short according to Islam the first purpose for the existance of humans is to worship Allah. From this worship derives many things that are essential to good living. We must achieve balance in life. Allah has made humanitarian effort pretty much obligatory on all of us, so that none lackt he essentials of life. To fulfill the rights of one another. To enjoin all types of good things and forbid all types of wrongdoing. It is said in hadith more or less that on the day of Judgement Allah will be lenient about the shortcomings in things we owed to Him i.e., forms of worship....but will not be lenient about the rights that we neglected on one another.

All of the above fall under worship of Allah and much more. It comes in hadith more or less that the prophet said not to sway too far to the right nor too far to the left, but stay a middle course. This is balance in life.

Excellent question !!!!!
This is the milliondollar question.
Well, I think we sometimes think that what we feel is the be all end all of reality and therefore our purpose, when it feels good, just do it, but when we tend to live out the first immediate feeling thinking it is my purpose we begin to get in trouble with our fellowman.
Thus pains hurts, anguish, disease, depression, sickness etc and a host of other repercussions begin to enter into our personal lives and the world in a whole.
So we may very well look at the chaos, self indulgence, greed, materialistic, selfish pursuit and behavior of man and say are we truly fulfilling our intended purpose or just living on the edge.
To some who believe in evolution,it may appear we have come full circle, from apes to man and are now returning back to our former state,at least in our behaviors and becoming as if we had no morals or accountability.

If we fail to fulfill or for that matter even find our true purpose is there going to be a day of reckoning or answering for acting in opposition to our intended purpose.
This will bring us back to the thread on the inherent law within us.

I hate this question.

My instict and belliefs tell me that I am here to learn to "become better".. to learn to try and become acceptable to God.

The thought though - on a lighter note (but still a valid thought) has struck me that I have attempted suicide (quite genuinely - no cries for help) four or five times, and have failed each time..

Could it be that my lesson was to succeed at comitting suicide ?:cover:
