What is our ultimate destiny?

MD

This thread was started to ask you, the folks of RF, what you think the ultimate destiny of humanity is, if there is one at all?

I believe our ultimate destiny ties in heavily with my religious belief of good triumphing over evil. It ties in with the idea that order should overcome chaos, that justice should overcome injustice and that truth is more important than victory.

To actualize this belief, we must all become the best versions of ourselves. We must be strong and moral characters in the universal dance between good and evil, and push ourselves physically, intellectually and spiritually towards our own ultimate potential, which I believe is infinite. We should always be vigilant of injustice, and always defend the importance of truth.

On a grander scale, we are meant to reach the stars and expand into the universe. We must expand our civilization, our bodies and our minds to heights we cannot even imagine and to the point that we can defeat the greatest source of chaos, entropy. Such goals would take eons to achieve.

What do you think our ultimate destiny as a species is?

I believe in Buddhist morals on how we see life. We are born, live, age, and pass away. The "heaven and hells" however phrased are from humanity's perspective but when I see nature and the cycle of life, I put myself in that same cycle. I change shifts and say "my ultimate purpose" if there is an 'ultimate' is to be comfortable with death. What I don't know. And smile just like my family members when they finally rested.

Since ultimate destiny is to be born, live, age, and die, our purpose is to understand this continuum and whether or not we believe in the afterlife, we are comfortable accepting we don't know. Even to say we don't know is hoping for something that by our surrounding environment, does not tell us any more evidence of "life after death" then we would be.

So, in that respect, I believe humanity is part of the circle of life. I do believe in spirits; and, that is my choice. It keeps me sane. Whether they are real or not is irrelevant. If we can admit and accept that, I feel humanity is a touch closer to acceptance of their actual passing not just living in the present and hoping for a better future.

In my opinion, we no more have an ultimate destiny than do carp, anteaters, elephants or gibbons.

The only difference is that we have a capacity for narrative that they appear to lack so we have the ability to create destinies for our species.

What is our ultimate destiny?

I think out ultimate destiny is to realize the Oneness of all. For the human species I am thinking we may advance at some point to not need to stay tied to physical bodies and not reincarnate into the physical. I think some alien races are already there; not primarily physical. Count on me to give an 'out there' answer :). I am going to test my luck by further by speculating that Bigfoots may even be a species that does not stay in the physical but sometimes enjoys physicality.

I think there is no such thing as ultimate destiny , it is cyclic , with evil gradually taking over good during the cycle and good defeating evil at the end of the cycle.

Its good to try and make things better. Lets also appreciate the good we remember, and we do not know whether things will get better or worse. If they get worse at least we know better.

Doesn't our ultimate destiny have to come from the reason for our existence?

If we have an all powerful Creator who had a purpose in putting us here, then he would have told us why we are here, what we are supposed to do here, and where this life leads us. So far all we see is a perpetual cycle of life and death. We know how wrong that feels and how empty life would be if this is all there is.

Since God's primary quality is love, then it has to be the motivation behind everything he does. The Bible tells us that God placed humans in a garden; a beautiful paradise where no harm was to come to anyone as long as they obeyed their sovereign ruler. Everlasting life was ensured on the proviso of obedience to just one command. Death would only come if they disobeyed that command. That means that humans were placed on this earth to enjoy unending life in peace, security and with no knowledge of evil........If only it had stayed that way. :(

An abuse of free will resulted in losing that garden paradise, but not forever. Those humans who prove that they can be obedient to their God, will again enjoy the earthly paradise. (Isaiah 55:11) Those who demonstrate that they don't want God's rulership over them, will not be permitted citizenship in his Kingdom. We all ultimately choose our own destiny.

I'd agree with you in general. Ultimate 'goodness' can only exist where free will entirely rejects the alternative - that in this sense- love is the ultimate goal and purpose of existence.

What greater motive for anything? :)

On colonizing the heavens- I'm not sure but it's an interesting thought. The Bible mentions the human population eventually becoming as numerous as the stars, which it also correctly compares to the number of grains of sand on Earth. Which may have seemed a gross exaggeration before we knew the scope of the universe.

Many scientists have noted also how curious it is, that the universe so lends itself to our understanding. For what reason? Perhaps just for that- to know, appreciate creation, to draw us out beyond ourselves make us ponder our purpose. So far it has also made us appreciate how special and specific to life Earth is. The odds don't look too great to me, for there being another one.

Beyond that- I might even wonder if we play a role in solving the ultimate paradox of creation/ first cause- but it gets pretty abstract at this point!

I agree with you, there is a duality in nature. And good and evil are at odds with each other. I do subscribe to some sort of dialectical materialism but I'm not a communist. Men are like Gods over the rest of nature, but I don't think we realize it. We need to realize hat our actions matter. I would like to expand this to not only the human race, but to the world itself. If man is God, what kind of God is he? Based upon where I sit we have work to do as beings who take care of the rest of nature. We do it rather poorly.

Achievement of the state of pure, limitless consciousness, beyond all activity (of good or bad).

I agree with the view in the OP, we have the potential for greatness as humanity, but at the moment seem to be slipping away from that for the sake of maintaining our "worse self". I never understood people who don't strive to improve their situation and their society toward reaching that potential.
