What is the Islamic view on reading the Quran?

I have read that the only true Quran is the arabic version. Is this true? Can a non-muslim read the Quran or is it forbidden?

A little off topic.

If a western person were to go to the middle east as a muslim would he/she be persecuted as long as they followed the customs?

Yes.

It is recommended they do. The Quran is mercy to mankind. And it is uncumbent on muslims to tell non muslims about the quran.

Let me just make sure I understand your question a westerner who goes to the middle east as a muslim? How would they be persecuted. That is like saying a Christian born here goes to Jeruselam to be with the Christians over there and you ask will they persecute them. But which customs are you referring to. Many confuse the Quran and the rules of Islam with customs of people. These people are muslim and they do this so this must be Islam. The rules of Islam supercede all customs unless the customs do not contradict anything in the religion. For example it was the custom in the time of Muhammed for the Arabs to bury their daughters alive. Islam forbids this. You see on the news, muslims as well as non muslims going out doing things that are their own customs or inventions. It is not permissible to harm women and children in Jihad but you see it happening and people saying this is Islam. If what they do contradicts islam then they are wrong and what they are doing is something else. I hope my answer helps peace.

That is true.

In translation many things don't get conveyed correctly or translated wrong (wife-beating, anyone?), hence why the Arabic is closest to the real meaning of the Qur'an.

Reading a few English translations of the Qur'an (many polyglot versions of the Qur'an can be found online and some in print) along with a commentary of some sort (some Qur'an provide this in the book) should be helpful in understanding even if you don't speak Arabic.

Can a non-muslim read the Quran or is it forbidden?
Anyone can read the Qur'an. I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about Islam.

Just that with with any Holy Book, care should be taken to treat it with respect, even if it isn't your religion. I have a special shelf for all my holy books (Many many versions and translations of Qur'an and Bible, Tao, etc) where I keep them clean and treated with respect.

What do you mean?

Yes; the only true holy version of the Quran is that in Arabic; for it is in Arabic that God revealed to Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him through his Angel Gabriel may peace be upon him.

Can a non-muslim read the Quran or is it forbidden?

Absolutely, we Muslims believe that the Quran is revealed for all human kind, for it is the last message from God for all humans.

A little off topic.

Why should they be persecuted???! Islam don't persecute non-Muslims, so what about Muslims?

I wasn't speaking of their religion, but rather their origins. I only know of the animosity towards the west from biased news- I admit. So I was just looking for some more insight.

I plan on going to the middle east. After I finish up my graduate school. Well basically I'm going to go on a journey from australia all the way across the east to europe and northern africa. Just to absorb culture, religion, learn different styles of music, and different ideas. I was just wondering since I'm not going as a muslim if I, as a westerner, would feel any animosity.

Not at all, as long as you avoid the places where there is conflict.

Visiting a new country is the best way of finding out first hand what that country is all about.

Welcome to Egypt any time.

All the best.

One of the things in Middle Eastern which is quite big, is truthfulness.

Honestly, go as yourself and do not lie and people will respect you for that.

If your going to read an English Qu'ran, make sure you gather and read suitable amounts of tafsir (exegesis)along with the chapter. Before reading the chapter, try and read about when the verses were revealed during the Prophet's (pbuh) life, so you can get a historical viewpoint added to your potential understanding.

If you really want to take the extra step, then you can go to a Mosque and ask a Scholar (or someone well knowledged in Arabic and Islam) to help you understand something.

I hope this helps.

First, you must define what is Western. Are you talking about Malcolm X? Shiekh Hamza Yusuf? Imam Zaid Shakir? Who?

Like the poster before me said, Islam trancends culture/customs. If you want to go to the Middle East, go as yourself like I said before and people will respect you.

Dear brothers
These are some of the important reasons for the conservative muslims
for not accepting any translated Quran as a Quran:
1.A translation by a human being can never be treated as a Qura'an.
2.original text will lost due to the translations in the living
languages,Christians made several translations and lost their
original Bible and split into number of denominations.
3.Arabic is sweet and miraculous language that any one from any
language background can recite it with perfection and this is
possible in no other language on the face of earth .
4.Allah has revealed the Qura'an in Arabic, that is why He has made
the Arabic language easy for learning and understanding.
5.Allah wants His followers to recite the holy Quran in Arabic only.
6.Though the translations of Arabic Scholars in Islam such as
Abdullah Yousuf Ali ,Abdul Majid Daryabadi,Abul A'ala Moududi are
true translations, they are not authenticated.
I request all of you to quote some scriptural references in
support of the above reasons so that every body can know and confirm
the facts.
Let us enlighten our people with the word of God

Allah Accepts Telugu prayers,All Prophets prayed only in their mother
tongues,Quran is not meant for only Arabs but for all.

Allah Accepts Telugu prayers

1. [40.Surah Momin: Ayath 60]
And your Lord says: Call upon Me, I will answer you."
We can call upon our Lord in our mother tongue Telugu.
2. [2.Surah Al-Baqarah: Ayath 186]
"And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then surely I am very
near; I answer the prayer of the requester when he calls on Me, so
they should answer My call and believe in Me that they may walk in
the right way."
We can request our Lord in our mother tongue Telugu
3. [27.Surah Naml: Ayath 62]
"Allah answers the distressed one when he calls upon Him and removes
the evil, and He will make you successors in the earth.
Allah answers us in our mother tongue Telugu.
4. [7.Surah Al-Ar'af Ayath 55:]
"Call on your Lord humbly and secretly; surely He does not love those
who exceed the limits."
We can call on our Lord humbly in our mother tongue Telugu by not
exceeding our limits into unknown languages.
5. [7.Al araf Ayah 56]:
When the Qur'an is recited; listen to it with complete silence so
that you may be shown mercy.
6. [7.Al araf Ayah 205]:
Bring your Lord to remembrance deep in your soul with humility and in
reverence without raising your voice, both in the mornings and in the
evenings; and be not of those who are heedless.
Let us listen Telugu Quran and completely understand the message of
God. Let us not be headless or heedless.
"All Prophets prayed only in their mother tongues"
[21.Surah Al-Anbiyaa Ayaths 83-84:]
"And Ayub, prayed to his Lord saying, "I am badly afflicted with
disease: but of all those who show mercy You are the most Merciful
Therefore we accepted his prayer and relieved his affliction, and
restored not only his family but also as many more with them as a
favor from Us so that it may serve as a reminder to Our worshipper
[21.Surah Al-Anbiyaa Ayaths 87-88]: We blessed Zun-nun (Yunus /
Jonah),when he departed in anger, thinking We would not take him to
task for this, but later he prayed to Us from the depths of
darkness, "There is no god but You, glory be to You! Indeed I was the
one who committed wrong." We accepted his prayer and delivered him
from distress; thus do we deliver the believers.
[21.Surah Al-Anbiyaa Ayaths 89-90: We also blessed Zakariya, when he
prayed to his Lord, "O my Lord! Do not let me remain childless even
though you are the best of inheritors. We accepted his prayer and
gave him Yahya (John), curing his wife for him to bear a child. They
were ever quick in emulating good deeds and called on us with hope,
fear, and submission
[2.Al Baqarah: 286] Allah does not burden any human being with more
than he can bear. Everyone will enjoy the credit of his deeds and
suffer the debits of his evil-doings. The believers say: "Our Lord!
Do not punish us if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord! Do not
place on us a burden as you placed on those before us. Our Lord! Lay
not on us the kind of burden that we have no strength to bear. Pardon
us, forgive us, Have mercy on us. You are our Protector, help us
against the unbelievers."
Quran is not meant for only Arabs but for all
[10. Surah Yunis: Ayah 37]
"And this Quran is not such as could be forged by those besides
Allah, but it is a verification of that which is before it and a
clear explanation of the book, there is no doubt in it, from the Lord
of the worlds."
Let us get a clear explanation of the book in Telugu our mother
tongue.
[4. Surah Nisaa: Ayah 82]
Do they not then meditate on the Quran?
Let us meditate on the Quran in Telugu our mother tongue.
[42. Surah Ash-Shura: Ayah 7]
"And thus have we revealed to you an Arabic Quran, that you may warn
the mother city and those around it..."
Let us warn people of our cities in Telugu our mother tongue and get
them into the party in the garden of heaven.
[6. Surah Al-An'am: Ayah 19]
"..this Quran has been revealed to me that with it I may warn you and
whomsoever it reaches.."
Let us make the Quran to reach our people in Telugu our mother tongue.
[41. Surah Fussilat: Ayah 3]
"A Book of which the verses are made plain, an Arabic Quran for a
people who know."
Let us made the verses of Quran plain into Telugu for our Telugu
people so that they know.
[12. Surah Yusuf: Ayah 2]
"We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'an, in order that ye may learn
wisdom."
Let us pass on the wisdom of Quran in Telugu to Telugu people.

[20. Surah Ta-ha: Ayah 2-3]
"We have not revealed the Quran to you that you may be unsuccessful.
Nay, it is a reminder to him who fears."
Let us reveal Quran in Telugu and make Telugu people successful.
[17. Surah Bani Israel: Ayah 106, 9]
"And it is a Quran which we have revealed in portions so that you may
read it to the people by slow degrees, and we have revealed it,
revealing in portions."
Let us enable Telugu people in reading and analyzing verse of Telugu
Quran.
"Surely this Quran guides to that which is most upright and gives
good news to the believers who do good that they shall have a great
reward."
Let us allow our Telugu people to get that guidance in Telugu by
which they will ultimately get a great reward.
