What is the purpose of Life?

Human life?

To be a part of, or helping God, eradicate the problem of sin.

And therefore to repopulate His Kingdom, replacing the third of the angels trampled down to the ground, lost to the Dragon's tail.

We are caught up in the Devil's bargain.

That's why there's no life on other planets.

God only has one Kingdom, and there is only one called Satan.

And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden.

Like the other post said, to worship God.

He will be our God and we will be his people

"And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.

"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

Peaceful Sabbath.

I respect all ideas and differences regarding life's purpose, including those who view that there is no purpose. From my personal POV, life's ultimate purpose is moksha, as we need a physical body to work out certain karmas. There are many minor purposes during the soul's sojourn.

If you don't have a purpose for your own life, what makes you suppose that it has any purpose at all, then?

I do not like the notion of my life being about some other entity's "purpose," especially when I'm not well-informed as to what that might be. And I might not like it if I were informed. After all, the chicken farmer doesn't tell his chickens that their purpose is to produce eggs and then be chopped up so their wings can be eaten in front of the TV with a nice hot sauce, or blue cheese and veggies sticks. Beef cattle would not be thrilled to learn that their whole purpose is steak, burgers and stew.

If life arose naturally on this planet, as I believe it did, then my purpose must remain resolutely my own -- I do not give anyone else the right to choose it for me.

Interesting thread!

Thanks to all who have posted.

For me the purpose of life is to love & be loved. To experience on a personal level just what it means to truly love my fellow beings regardless of their creed or belief or personality or behaviour ... far easier in "theory" than in actuality!

Thanks again to all of you.

"The"?

Why assume there's only one?
Why assume there is any?

I mean, outside the individual or perhaps groups of individuals, there does not appear to me to be some all encompassing purpose of life.

Though I do find it interesting that humans tend to ignore most if not all non-human life when they come up with answers at to what the all encompassing (meaning only humans) purpose of life....

Purpose is something conscious beings give to things. It isn't something within the object or process.

So, as I see it, there is NO purpose in life outside of what *we* give to it. We get to decide what our purpose is. We get to decide what our goals are. We get to decide that is meaningful to us.

I don't look outside for purpose. I look inside.
Isn't the purpose of all life, animal or vegetable, first to survive, and then to thrive?

But I agree that we get to decide HOW we will thrive.

The purpose is whatever a person creates that purpose to be. Hopefully some of it includes enjoying being alive and most includes being a decent human being. Probably for most other living creatures besides humans, it is just to survive and reproduce.

Not really. Those populations that don't survive go extinct. Those that adapt continue to survive. Then end result is that those that are adapted to their environment survive.

That isn't a *purpose* as much as a statement of how things work.

I think we give life (a) purpose in order that we can better live. And to live is the purpose

What are your thoughts on what the purpose of life is?
I always figured it's my life, so I can make it about whatever I want.

But I also acknowledge the fact that I'm fortunate enough to have been born in a time and place where I have that luxury, something most people who've existed didn't/don't have.

If you mean something other than what purpose do we each assign to our lives, life has no apparent purpose to the atheist. The question implies an intelligent designer with a purpose in mind for creating life. If such a thing exists, I suppose we would have to ask it what it had in mind for us when it created us.

What is the purpose of a river? I know what its value is, and how it can be used to support our purposes, like providing food, drinking water, and transport, but what's its purpose? The question doesn't make sense unless somebody put it there with a purpose in mind.
