What is the scariest movie that you have ever seen?

Kathryn

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
"Angel Heart" and "Blair Witch Project" are the two scariest movies I've ever seen, though "Jacob's Ladder" ranks up there too.

And I LOVE "The Shining!"

I find it difficult to imagine how anyone could find Blair Witch Project scary.

Just watched Cannibal Holocaust. That deserves a mention on this thread.

Be warned, this movie is quite explicit and quite gory.

I have to hold my hands up here, honestly I found BWP scary.

It depends on how much you let it "get" to you.

I really loved the idea of having it all first-person, and sorta y' know, down-to-earthish - it made it seem more real.

Yes, yes it is quite violent...
I'm gonna ruin my horror street cred by admitting I really loathe that film. It's racist attitudes towards the Yanonamo and Shamatari are well known and any film that uses the torture of animals as entertainment (though the animals were eaten by the Yanonamo) bothers me. Ruggero Deodato did later apologize saying "it was stupid to introduce animals."

But there's no denying Cannibal Holocaust upped the ante on horror film violence and was the first horror film to manipulate the media into thinking it was a true story (ala The Blair Witch Project), even hiding the actors for several months
the production wanted to maintain the illusion since the characters all die
while the film's notoriety grew and grew.

Yeah, despite my self righteous rant I do own the dvd and it does have an interesting commentary from the director Deodato and star Kerman. I have to admit the film is both horrific and influential.

I thought that the only way that the film could be seen as racist is in regards to the violence that the tribe undertakes against the white documentary film crew, which was justified by the actions of the white people...
...particularly the burning of the villiage with the tribe members inside.

As for the animals, was it necessary to show their slaughter? Certainly not. But I find it quite interesting that we can, quite realistically, depict the deaths and murders of a multitude of people in many films, which will get little reaction from me unless it is extremely graphic and horrible, but I had much more of a reaction towards the murder of the animals, even without knowing, at the time, that the murder of the animals was real.

It. Hands down. Being as I find clowns so very creepy and I am arachnophobic, that movie does me in but good.

And not a "scary" movie for most, but Arachnophobia gives me the heebies jeebies as well.

Hehe, if you think that is scary just thank your lucky stars that I decided not to write horror novels. I figure the world is twisted enough already.

Pity they don't make the Qur'an into a movie. That would scare the socks off of folks.

I remember being very young watching Beetlejuice.

That film scared the hell out of me at the time. I didn't sleep all night.

Actually, I'll go ahead and rate that the scariest movie ever, because it's the film that I've been most scared while watching.

That is so weird, Luke. I LOVED Beetlejuice and laughed myself silly throughout the movie. How old were you? 2?

LOL You're so mean!

It was at a friends sleep-over birthday party, and I would have been something like 8 or 9 years old.

Of course it's silly now, but at the time, all the lights were out and we were all scaring ourselves with it. I don't think any of us knew that it wasn't supposed to be a scary movie, that we didn't realise it was supposed to be funny.
