If that is the case - and I'm not saying that it is - but even if that's the case, how does this make smashing statues right? What justification do you have for such a crass social and cultural affront?

People have been leaving stuff at graves and tombs, long before the invention of gods, and tens of millennia before the Vikings arriving in Russia.
Such a custom wasn't invented by the Vikings, sovietchild.
And lot of the ceremony and customs of leaving something for the dead, didn't originally occur because of gods or religions. There have ancient belief in the afterlife, long before any belief of organised religions.
