What is wrong with the world?

Thief

Rogue Theologian
I heard somewhere, this planet can support only 9billion people.

At the current rate of increase and should I live to the age of my grandfather...
I will see 12billion people on this earth.

Will this tip the scale and bring chaos?...yeah.

Is there sufficient time to scale back and save ourselves?....nay.

Are you ready?

I am sorry if I have misunderstood your point, but are you saying there is no right or wrong?

I am saying that the universe is inherently an amoral entity and that it is humans that decide to say there is a "right" or a "wrong" of things. To put it another way, morality is a human social construct. Philosophically, I am a moral nihilist. However, being forced to live in a culture that slaps moral dimensions onto everything, I functionally behave as a moral relativist. Like any human, I have my own self-righteous standards of what "right" and "wrong" are but I am not arrogant enough to suppose that's some sort of objective or universal truth. My "right" is not better than someone else's "right" simply because it is claimed to be. It's an opinion and nothing more. "Honorable conduct involves considering the consequences of your actions" is an opinion, not an objective truth.

I think this probably explains the point where you think I was contradicting myself in your last paragraph. I have opinions, I just don't think they're some universal, objective "right." That's arrogant, IMHO. When people get on platforms and say "the world needs fixing" it makes me very nervous because it will always brew more conflict and problems (because nobody agrees on what is "wrong" much less the solutions to "fix" the world). The only reason I stand on an environmentalist platform is because I feel the problems of NOT doing something will far exceed the problems caused by my taking a stance on the issue. :D

Socrates wasn't bothered by a budget.
He also failed as an educator in general. He died because one of the "youth" he was instructing brought a suit against him, and the penalty was death.

That said, the education system is flawed for a number of reasons, and budget isn't by any means on the top of the list.

And what can we as people do to change it?

It is my belief that there is something fundamentally wrong with the way human beings nowadays live their lives. This wrongness is part of what is fueling the unhappiness inherent in today's culture and the increasing divide between man and nature. I want some honest opinions. What's wrong with the world? And how can we change it?

The problem with the way humans live is we are too needy and a lot of the wants we have are not even feasible and/or are not even real needs. Our market system has allowed a lot of people to strive after what they want but it is an endless cycle of wanting more and more, never really being satisfied.

In a word? Civilization. I think it was a really bad idea.

In my religion the purpose of education is to unveil the truth to people.

I think the big problem with modern education is that our system is antiquated. It's geared toward a world in which access to information was limited, communication across distances took time, and individualized interest oriented instruction wasn't really possible. Technology has eliminated these problems, but education techniques haven't adapted accordingly.

In my religion the purpose of education is to unveil the truth to people.
I tend to agree with philosophers like Plato and Confucius who thought that the purpose of education was to produce moral virtuous citizens.

Only because we don't demand more out of those who educate.
Nor do we demand more out those being educated.

As long as we keep lowering the bar in order to not hurt the feelings of those who have it harder to learn, it is only going to get worse.

Civilization was a bad idea? Neither hospitals, schools or even towns would exist if it wasn't for civilization. Do you honestly think the world would be better without these things or that civilization has some serious flaws that exceed its positive sides?

What is wrong with the way you live your life? Surely if you know it's wrong, you can change it.

Neither hospitals, schools, or towns would be necessary without civilization.

Both.
