What is wrong with THESE people?

Out of context. Read the first verse in that chapter. Those who set their minds on things above would never even worry about the 20th verse.
What other parts of the Bible do you think are superfluous?

How about all those Old Testament passages where a man's wife and children are listed among his possessions?

It seems poor planning for an author to include verses in a book or letter that he intended the readers to ignore.

Yep. And if you take it out of context you get the common misunderstanding he got.
Is "out of context" anything more than "an interpretation I don't like"?

Just to be clear: I'm not arguing that any particular interpretation of any particular passage is the one and only authoritative interpretation; I'm arguing that the Bible is vague and flexible enough that anyone can find support there for virtually any position.

Whether you're planning to help the homeless or traffic your own children, there are verses you can quote to infer that what you want to do is endorsed by God. In either case, they're contradicted by other verses, but who reads the whole Bible, anyway?

Jeff Dee described the Bible as "the Big Book of Multiple Choice", and he's right: shove any opinion you want into it and it comes out "endorsed by God".
