What is wrong with those people who bully others in order to silence them?

I was reading an article today about how one cyclist tried to silent one journalist, because the journalist was tracking down witnesses with knowledge of his program of illegal doping and writing articles about it. The cyclist would target him, dub him a “little troll”, and bring defamation cases against the journalist. The cyclist used his popularity, and his access to the media in order to bully the journalist into silence. To cut the story short, the cyclist eventually got in trouble for doping, and all his trophies was taken away from him.

What is wrong with those people who bully others in order to silence them?

Seems to me the more important question would be: what is wrong with people who let bullies win?

Dare I bring up the Danish Cartoons?

Whoever got hired to kill those cartoon makers only made 2 problems out of 1, and made those cartoons more popular. Let's concentrate on the real issue.

IT IS THE REAL ISSUE!!!

How many western mainstream newspapers printed those cartoons? None.
Why? Because they were bullied by fear of reprisals.

Why did you brought up those cartoons? Are you trying to silent me and defame me by trying to associate me with the killers?

I don't think so. It's simply part of the conversation.

This is a free and open forum where ideas can flow without fear of harm to any of the posters, right? That's one of the things that makes this place so great. You are talking about bullying for silence, which just so happens to be the main approach used by those who would "defend" their faith with violence. Altfish is literally talking about the same thing that you are. The fact that it may get uncomfortable for people of that religious persuasion is just a side effect - it's not a terrible thing to discuss uncomfortable ideas.

This is not what I was talking about, let's concentrate on the real issue.
I did bring up the real issue.
The reason people bully is because they get away with it.

It is interesting how you are not wanting to talk about another issue of the exact same nature you yourself brought up in the OP.
Why it is you do not want to talk about the Danish Cartoons?

Same scenario as your as your OP story.

The media being bullied..

Doesn't it look like he is trying to silent me, and attempting to defame me by associate me with them? Them, who made 2 problems out of 1 by making those cartoons more richer and more popular. Why did he even ask "Dare I bring up the Danish Cartoons?" Why is it that the first thing that popped in his mind was cartoon killers?

Their are often protecting their self-interest. People in positions of power will use that power to prevent themselves from losing power and money.

Most people care more about safeguarding their own future rather than 'fair play'.

"What is wrong with those people who bully others in order to silence them?"

They place themselves at the center of their sordid little universe, and demand that Reality arrange itself to suit them.
It is, in a nutshell, a matter of ego placing its own importance above all else.
This is why religion was always - until now - the cornerstone of civilization. It underpins everything else. Without it, one's context is removed, leaving only one's own personal ego to run the individual show, battling it out with billions of other equally important egos.
The bully is the one with the biggest ego.

Whereas, with God, or a notion of God, one's ego is at least reduced in importance, since it is lower than God in the hierarchy of importance.
So, what is wrong with the bully? A lack of humility, even a total lack, which has the universe revolving around the bully's ego, instead of its silly little ego revolving around God.

That was rather poorly written, but the point is in there, somewhere, for anyone with an open enough mind to dig for it.

I brought up the cartoons because it was a very relevant example of bullying being used to silent people.
No, I'm not trying to silent you or defame you. When did I associate you with the killers? Not a clue what you are talking about.

No.
He merely asked about them.
It is your reaction to his mere question that is interesting.

Them, who made 2 problems out of 1 by making those cartoons more richer and more popular. Why did he even ask "Dare I bring up the Danish Cartoons?" Why is it that the first thing that popped in his mind was cartoon killers?
What relevance is there if that is the first thing he thought of?

How about instead of getting all up in arms over it, you simply address it?

If memory serves (and it might not) you have already publicly declared your disdain for the threats over the cartoons.

It works. Nothing wrong with them. They are accomplishing exactly what they set out to do. Kind of what God does right? Threaten folks with hell. If it's good enough for God.

You want folks to do something or not do something, bullying works. I suppose we are a social species and no one wants to be cast out from the group.

I remember when I was a kid, they had some Asian kids start at our school. Kids I know maybe it was first or second grade. They kind of surrounded them and called them names. I was with the group of people surrounding them. I felt bad but didn't say anything.

I went to talk to them later but they remembered I was in the group that surrounded them. They didn't really want anything to do with me. I was at a loss for words. I didn't know how to apologize, I didn't stick up for them against my "friends". So I just left them alone.

Sometimes I think bullying is necessary in a group to keep people in line. Bullying can also be bad, like picking on the new kids in school.

I don't think you can just see bullying in black and white.

For example, few weeks ago there was one who bombed the football's team bus in Germany and left a letter by the scene, stating that the act is from ISIS. But the truth is, the bomber was actually trying to make a quick buck by betting on team's stock to go down. And, this is just one guy. Imagine on the large scale level. Using one's popularity and using the media to defame Islam. So, please don't try to associate ISIS with Islam. Majority of people think ISIS is a product of the west anyways. Last time I checked US Government can hire pirates to attack the nation's enemies.

Proof that it goes both ways... See?

The issue is the same regardless of the setting - bullying to silence dissent.
Let's just talk about the issue here and not take things personally.

I'm sorry SovietChild but I do not understand why you think I am trying to silence you, I AM NOT. Where have I associated YOU with the cartoons?
You started a thread "What is wrong with people who bully others in order to silence them". I gave an example of just such an occurrence. Can you name a better example? If so, bring it on. Maybe Salman Rushdie and The Satanic Verses was as bad.
As an atheist I am disturbed by attacks on free speech, the Danish Cartoon and The Satanic Verses episodes are possibly the most shameful examples of this. Both from the threats made by the Islamic mobs; but also by the way most of the western press and western leaders saw little wrong with it and supported the bans.
