No...this isn't Eros, so you fellas and fellettes just go ahead and get your minds out of the gutter...

Do you have a preferred position when praying or meditating such as sitting, kneeling, standing, prostrate, etc.?

If so, what is it?

Is it directional, i.e. facing north, south, east, or west?

Does this position or direction have any impact on the effectiveness of the practice? If so, how or why?

Lotus, facing north.

Siva faces south in my home mandir, and in agamic temples. Not really a practical, nor preferential reason. The agamas would have an explanation for why He faces south.

These old knees attached to this physical body are inconsistent, but if not lotus, then cross legged, spine erect. But to does vary somewhat, as at temples, I'll face the deity, and Ganesha temples face east.

What's your preference?
Is this just preference or for practical reasons? If the latter, what practical differences do you find between this and other directions and/or positions?

I sit on my office chair with an ottoman in front of it with a cross-legged position facing Nataraja and my lingam.

No real practical reason other than a pain-free relaxed position that is distraction free. I find these days I can mediate anywhere in any position regardless of perceived distractions.

"During any worship service in the Orthodox Church, everyone (including the priest) faces East. While it may seem rude at first glance, to have the priest facing away from us, there is actually quite a lot of meaning behind this tradition. In this post, we explain why Orthodox Christians pray facing East whenever possible, and where we get this tradition from."

I find things like this cool and also meaningful. Some stop and drop; others stand and face a certain direction. I figure I'll keep doing what comes most natural to me, which typically involves lots of pacing and moving around in introspection and sometimes outward expression. This rarely involves any standard chant or words or hand gestures. It's just me living, moving and having my being in God, and the interaction between us.

Acts 17:28, one of my favorite bits of Scripture.

During meditation, I sit on a floor cushion with the legs crossed and the back either straight or mostly straight. My hands are together like in a certain photo of Sri Ramakrishna. It’s just something for comfort and to be without many distractions.

Is it directional, i.e. facing north, south, east, or west?

Throughout the years, I have found that northeast and southeast are personally and especially suitable for me. East is okay. North and south are directions that I find too intense. I don’t know about west though.

Regardless of which direction I face, there is Bhagavān.

I tend to face south, but that's because where the window is.

I take it that facing the window is conducive to your meditation being good?

The Gospel says not to show off, when you pray, in order to show others how pious you are.
Matthew, 6,5.
