According to the history books, Lao-tzu was born around 600 B.C. Not only was he a librarian at the royal court of the Chou dynasty , but he specialized in subjects such as astrology and prediction and was in charge of the sacred records.
in theTao Te Ching or Lao-tzu, hedocumented his thoughts and philosophies .
From those, we know that he was comitted to pacifism and his writings indicated a contemplative introspection that has rarely been equalled by his followers.

according to legend...(there are many variations, btw.) the tao te ching was in all probability written by several authors. its origins might be oral. the oldest known copy of TTC dates from 206 BC. it is believed the text took shape between 700BC - 200BC.michel said:
the origins of attributing the tao te ching to lao tzu is as far as i know lost in history - like homer or moses. fittingly enough, 'lao tzu' means 'old master' or 'old child'.
does this matter? yes. it matters when reading the bible or the iliad, so why not the tao te ching?
