Someone who is willing to follow the debate all the way to it's logical/illogical conclusion.
Someone who came up with that great response, and accepts peoples input like the frubals I am about to give.

Humor is fine but deprecatory jabs seem to send a message of intellectual or moral superiority. Subtle sarcasm can be helpful in making a point, but full blown derision has no place on a board like this.

You can make a point without trying to bludgeon your “opponent” into submission with mean spirited comments about their logic, their morality or the origin.

Foe me, I feel like I have won ONLY when I learn something about myself or about others. Other than that, I have no need to prove anything or to “win” in any discussion.

In addition to that, claiming that you only “use facts” or that something can “be clearly seen” raises HUGE RED FLAGS on my BS-O-Meter. It is far better to be circumspect about your apparent infallibility than to present yourself as an arrogant jerk.

Actually Soul,

I try NOT to debate, but to reason. If I had it ALL figured out, I would debate, but there is still so much to learn.

What are some of the rules of good debate? I can tell you things I think make a bad debater:

put downs
sarcasm
name calling
disrespect for someone elses beliefs
Thinking this is a shooting gallery and we are all ducks
Forcing your opinion on others

What do you think?

Why...being me of course :D.

Seriously, though, a good debater should be able to word his own arguments relatively clearly.
He should be level-headed and hard to get angry.
He should be knowledgable about what he speaks on.
He should be able to look at an argument and criticize its premises and/or flow of logic.
He should be tolerant.
He should be capable of ceding points.

Those are things I look for...and I'm not always the best at them.
