what makes a man, a man?

I meant in a philsophical sense, you burks

That's why I asked if you meant what makes a man a "man" or if you meant what makes a male a "male". Just clarifying because they mean two different things but one often states or defines one when they meant the other.

Solely on gender I would say what makes a man a "man" is culturally dependent. In one culture it may be getting passed out drunk. In another it may mean putting a leaf glove on your arm bearing hundreds of bullet ants and being stung repeatedly until you want to pass out. I'm a man in one of those cultures but a complete wuss in the other.

Make a list of all the things animals do and compare to the list of things animals cannot do.
The items of manipulation will stand out.

Then decide if you are animal...or something more.

That something more will mostly be......a soul....as noted in Genesis.

If you are referring to gender, I will only state that the very concept is out dated and needs to be wiped off the face of the earth.

None... we are all one and the same, strictly speaking the differences are illusions. I suppose you could say testosterone, but some women produce that in ample amounts too.

I have an answer in my conservative, cowboy type fantasy brain but that is a subjective experience and not worthy of a true definition.

This world can analize and size you up and throw you on the scales
They can I.Q. you and run you through
Their rigorous details
They can do their best to rate you
And they'll place you on the charts
And then back it up with scientific smarts
But there's more to what you're worth
Than their human eyes can see
Oh, I say the measure of a man
Is not how tall you stand
How wealthy or intelligent you are
'Cause I've found out the measure of a man
God knows and understands
For He looks inside to the bottom of your heart
And what's in the heart defines
The measure of a man

Man's naturally ability to assign a phonetic sound to convey the meaning of 'one of our species'.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
I like men. They taste like chicken.

OK, for real - what makes a man manly? I'm assuming that we're talking about the positives of manly behavior, or at least I am.

When I think of this topic, I can't help but think of my four favorite men - my husband, my dad, and my two grown sons.

A manly man is a leader without being a bully.

He's tender without being soft.

He's passionate without being brutish.

He's boyish without being immature.

He's wise without being a smart ***.

He's humourous but never at another's expense.

He's kind without being a pushover.

He's tough but not cruel.

He isn't afraid to cry, and he isn't afraid to stand up for what is right.

He knows how to handle a gun, a vaccum cleaner, a chain saw, a computer, and a baby.

He knows when to say "You look beautiful tonight." And he knows when to say nothing at all.

My favorite men smell like the outdoors, leather, aftershave and faintly of tobacco.

Delicious.

That's awesome! :D

XY chromosomes, which means transmen are not really men nor will they ever be.

I was waiting for someone to say this :sarcastic

What about people with androgen insensitivity syndrome, Klinefelter's syndrome, hermaphrodites, etc? how do they stack up to your definition of being male? are they just unfortunate mutations?

Unfortunate mutations? That's exactly what they are. But it's been noted in this thread that there is more than one valid definition of what a man is. Having XY chromosomes is just the most literal-scientific. It's the only detail you can't get fixed during GR surgery. Actually, I'm kind of glad there's no such things as gender reassignment on the molecular level. That's terrifiying to me because if the technology for that exists, what other technologies must also exist because of it? If Seth Brundle can invent a teleporter, who says he can't also invent a gene-splicer at the same time?
