Going on Shyanekh's train of thought--Church of the Subgenius, Partridge Family Temple, Scientology, earlier Church of Satan, TOPY, Al Manning's ESP Lab, Esalen, Objectivism, Grant's OTO.
The Partridge Family Temple??? Do they have a branch in Florida? I would love to go to one! How about the Church of Fred Mertz? Seriously, I find Shinto, Taoism, Zen, Native North and South American religions most fascinating.

Good news!

"Their are many Temples. The Partridge Family Temple (PFT) is run very much like a fast-food chain in that anyone can open a franchise. The major temples right now are in Los Angeles, San Pueblo, Portland and Denver. But there are temples in Kenosha, Florida, Japan, Germany and England, as well as this temple in Cyberlandia." -- Frequently Asked Questions

there are different kinds of athiests though, not all are materialists

although most are

I was unaware there were different kinds of atheists in the world. I'm pretty sure when we use the word atheist to describe our religious affiliation we cling to that word because it's something simple that sums up that we do not believe in any theological deity, and do not desire to.

As far as most atheists being materialist goes, you can't back that up with any statistical data and it is such an outlandish statement I nearly fell out of my chair.

It's amazing the love I have found for life and simply being, because it is such a fluke. Life is neat. I love life, not my things.

Isn't there a well-known post-er here whose religion is Girls on Trampolines? That's pretty hard to beat.

An atheist is one who simply rejects the idea of a supernatural deity or deities. That leaves a great deal of room for varied philosophical, religious, and spiritual choosings. Atheists can be quite diverse although having a commonality in the rejection of gods and entitites.

Materialism is a metaphysical position and not simply referring to the love of "things."

um......

from the silly dictionary:

Main Entry: ma·te·ri·al·ism http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/materialist# Pronunciation: \mə-ˈtir-ē-ə-ˌli-zəm\ Function: noun Date: 1733 1 a: a theory that physical matter is the only or fundamental reality and that all being and processes and phenomena can be explained as manifestations or results of matter

So, basically what you are saying is that based on the definition of Materialism, it is linking that theory to all atheists, since the definition of atheism relates to that same concept. Only believing in what they can see touch and feel, rather than as one person on here likes to call it, the imaginary sky daddy. :p

But not all atheists are materialists. Some believe in souls and such. They just don't believe in God.

any brand of religion which doesnt detach us from the world and has a sense of humility in our place in a greater chain of life.

You know.. I look for that Zennish-Kabbalistic twist which overrides dogma, literalism, and the other trends that rob a culture from its folklore.

this do?:

This same transmutation is understood to occur in faithful Christians within Eastern Orthodox tradition. Theosis or god-becoming is the recognized vocation of all Christians. The transfiguration is a doxophony, a revelation of glory. Peter and James, the only witness to this event, are confused, choosing to make tents to shelter from the glory, perhaps in imitation of the sukkah booth of the feast of the Tabernacles. The other participants –Elijah and Moses –have already beheld God face to face and have already experienced the glory of the Shekinah.

From where do they think 'souls' come ? does evolution say anything about souls ?
I'm betting that depends on the atheist, but sadly, I didn't have the oppurtunity to probe the beliefs of the few I've encountered.

And no, evolution has nothing to say for or against souls. Just like God. :)
