What religious leader or figure would make the best RF member?

It was asked if Jesus would join RF. But what about Buddha, Krishna, Brother John (your local pastor), some Sinsei, or some other religious figure?

I don't know about being the best member but I can sure imagine most of the forum coming down on Pope Benedict when he said condoms weren't good for Africa. I'd buy tickets to that!

"...we have been pioneers in the theorization of Islamic-Christian dialogue. Indeed, we continue to call for fruitful, humanitarian, and objective dialogue"

That was a quote by By his His Eminence the Grand Ayatollah Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah (may God protect him!) who is a Lebanese Shia cleric.

William Penn would be a great member.

"There is a zeal without knowledge, that is superstition. there is a zeal against knowledge, that is interest or faction; there is a zeal with knowledge, that is religion; and if you will view the countries of cruelty, you will find them superstitious rather than religious. Religion is gentle, it makes men better, more friendly, loving and patient than before."

Swami Vivekananda said this in his speech delivered at the Parliament of Religions held in Chicago in 1893

swami_vivekananda-1893-09-signed.jpg

"Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long possessed this beautiful earth. They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often and often with human blood, destroyed civilization and sent whole nations to despair. Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced than it is now. But their time is come; and I fervently hope that the bell that tolled this morning in honor of this convention may be the death-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen, and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal."

Some more quotes

"He is an atheist who does not believe in himself. The old religions said that he was an atheist who did not believe in God. The new religion says that he is an atheist who does not believe in himself."

"I am sure God will pardon a man who will use his reason and cannot believe, rather than a man who believes blindly instead of using the faculties He has given him."

"Material civilization, nay, even luxury, is necessary to create work for the poor. Bread! Bread! I do not believe in a God who cannot give me bread here, giving me eternal bliss in heaven! Pooh!"

The Swami also believed that if women were given equal rights and education they did need the help of any man including himself.

"Liberty is the first condition of growth. It is wrong, a thousand times wrong, if any
of you dares to say, "I will work out the salvation of this woman or child." I am
asked again and again what I think of the woman question. Let me answer once
for all -- am I a widow that you ask me that nonsense? Am I a woman that you
ask me that question again and again? Who are you to solve women's problems?
Are you the Lord God that you should rule over every widow and every woman?
Hands off! They will solve their own problems."

Caitanya Mahaprabhu because he could win any argument even if he didn't agree with what he was arguing. I would love to see that.

I would give a platform in one of the subforums for Pythagoras, Newton and Einstein to discuss their scientific theories and understanding in the background of their spiritual vision and to explore how theology, geometry, mathematics and religion have developed through the periods. I would listen to what Einstein and Newton had to say about what is believed to be Pythagoras' concept of harmony of the spheres.

I would invite Pope Urban II who initiated the first Crusade to discuss or debate with Pope Benedict the current positions of the Church on various issues, from science, to inter faith dialogue with Islam, to the current influence of the Church Vs, its political influence during the time of Urban.

I would bring Augustus Caesar to the historical debates forum, and invite contemporary dictators with a personality cult around them like Kim Jong-il and try to paint the differences between Augustean propaganda in mythology and art and current day deification of the leader of North Korea.

The same thing is said of Swami Vivekananda when he made a visit to Harvard he beat many professors in debates in there own field. They have letters from some of these professers admiting as much. This is one of the reasons his birthday is a national Holiday ( youth day) in India.
