Namaste
I am just curious as to what a "service" consists of in the temples that you attend or have visited. If you could give me a basic run down of what goes on, I would be interested to read it.
It totally depends on the temple, so if I spoke of all the temples I've been to, it would take several pages. At my regular temple, there is daily abhishekham in the main sanctum, other sanctums at least once a week, and two daily pujas lasting about half an hour that include several things like aarti, chanting of names, offering of food etc. The rest of the time that it is open, archanas are available for anyone who shows up.
I cheated. This is the link to my temple's services :: Sri Guruvayurappan Temple :: I usually attend the abhishekams on the special days, weekend or during the week. After work I go for the evening Vishnu Sahasranama, Maha Mangala Aarati, and abhishekam for the day. I might stay for the Sayankala Puja, Seeveli, and Ratri Puja. Mine is also south Indian style.
My temple's a North Indian Shakti Mandir. In the morning Mataji is woken up with aarti and dressed. In the evening she is put to bed with aarti. I'm not sure what else.
I go to the local ISKCON temple, since it's the only Vaishnava temple around.
There's usually five aratis every day.
We do have an evening Sunday service, which is called the 'Sunday Feast.' This usually begins with Gaura Arati (Arati to Sri Chaitanya), then a small class on a verse from Srimad Bhagavad Gita. After class is kirtana of the Hare Krishna Mahamantra. We sing Nrisimha Pranamas, and then we take prasadam (offered food), a decent vegetarian meal.
